SONAR Protection turns itself off

I just installed NIS 2011 tonight after a totally frustrating experience upgrading to a competitor’s 2011 edition. I’m pretty sure I did a thorough uninstall of that awful software before installing Norton. However, I did not realize that you absolutely cannot run real-time Malwarebytes with NIS. I turned that off. I’ll miss the malicious website feature. Also I am still unsure whether Immunet can coexist with NIS, but turned off the clam AV part. Everything seems to be working except SONAR turns itself off and then when I try to do the auto fix, it can’t be fixed. I reboot and SONAR will stay on for a few minutes and then turn itself off again. I saw one drawn out thread about this. Those instances appeared to be fixed by the latest software release. I have 18.5.0.125. My OS is Windows XP Home SP3. Short of trying an uninstall and reinstall, does anyone have a possible remedy? Also, how unprotected am I without this component? I’ve still got to find my way with Norton terminology, GUI, settings, etc. Thanks in advance for any help.

I only turned off the real-time protection of Malwarebytes and only turned off the clam AV part of Immunet Protect. Neither made any difference. Thanks.

Turning off realtime protection will not be enough for Malwarebytes (MBAM) as it can hook in the same parts of your OS as NIS and SONAR does.

Try to uninstall MBAM completely and see if SONAR then stays on. Almost sure it is MBAM.

If not, then also uninstall Immunet AV and see if SONAR stays on.

Maybe you need special uninstall procedure for those products to also remove latest remnants. Check both websites for that.

According to Immunet website, it should be able to run next to NIS 2010 (NIS 2011 not mentioned anywhere). If it runs alongside NIS 2011, i doubt if it has added value, as NIS also offers cloud protection.

When your problem is sorted out, you can always use Malwarebytes free version to run on-demand scans. The free version does not have so many hooks in the OS and can run next to NIS.

Thanks for the advice. Seems SONAR “magically” isn’t turning itself off now like it was before. I will monitor that for some time to see if it has corrected itself. Otherwise, I will follow the steps you advise. In fact, it sounds as though the MBAM paid version uninstall is pretty important either way. Your explanation of that was brilliantly clear by the way…good job! Will report back regarding resolution.

Just wanted to follow up and say the problem seems to have resolved itself somehow. Still, I took your advice and uninstalled the paid version of Malwarebytes and reinstalled the free version. So far, Immunet seems not to conflict, although NIS registered one high CPU alert for it. Maybe I should get rid of it too? NIS is great so far. It is so unobtrusive that I sometimes worry it’s not running.

joejibster,

Thks for the follow up. As far as i can see, Immunet does not have any added value to NIS.

The CPU warning/spike of Immunet can however be caused by running an Immunet background task that takes a lot of CPU time, or.....from hindering Norton, hooking in the same place of your operating system as NIS.

See if it persists and otherwise go to Immunet site and look for a complete removal procedure.

In general however, it it is advisable not to run two security programs, executing the same tasks, together, as it can even compromise your security, because they are in eachother's way.

NIS is designed with 'don't hinder user with uncessary messages, when all is ok', so as long as your system tray icon had tge greena arrow, it should be running well.

Cheers.

I just now been having the sonar turn off and 'not fixed' message. Support suggest "tool removal" and I did that followed by a reinstall and 5 minutes after the 'at risk' message reappeared. Same vivious circle...

Hi donahu1,

Please assist us in gathering debug logs for this issue.

Here is how you can collect debug logs:

1) Visit the below site:
http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080507162141EN

2) Make one change to the steps listed:
Step 2.6: Check all the advanced options

3) In the end, no files will be sent to Symantec automatically. You will be shown the location of the logs after you complete the form after hitting the "finish" button.

Let me know when you have the logs ready, I will help you to upload it.

Thanks,

Sheen.
