SSL is designed to prevent scanning like this, otherwise malware can still scan your SSL connections and grab sensitive information like bank account # and password.
You are still protected against viral threats because AutoProtect will scan and prevent hazardous attachments from being opened (attachments will need to be extracted to temporary locations first, where AP will kick in and remediate). For anti-spam point of view, we are researching how to better integrate with Windows Mail/Outlook Express so that users can do a spam scanning even if there are SSL connections.
Yes, what you say is true, but there are many AV programs that can ‘catch’ and scan the message after decryption, or before it when it’s being sent. Why is NIS not one of them?
Are you currently using Gmail? Honestly your better off using web based email then pop3. I stop using Outlook years ago. Now all I do is log into Yahoo web page. Its a lot safer. Simply log into your Gmail account via a web page.
With all due respect Dieselman Gmail is not the only one that uses SSL. I use Outlook on one computer & Outlook express on the other. My ISP requires secure SSL connection. I not going to use a web based e-mail account. I use outlook for other things than just e-mail. GData, Nod32, Kasperesky & Advast can scan my SSL e-mail account!! I’m sure others will also, they have an Outlook plug-in to scan my e-mail.
Considering the fact that a lot of e-mail traffic is now done over Gmail, and even my workplace account now uses SSL for POP3 and SMTP authentication, I would like to know whether Symantec plans to introduce SSL e-mail scan support into NIS in the future, and if it does, when?
In NIS 2009, 2010, or never?
I would like an answer to this also. My ISP requires a secure SSL connection for POP3 & SMTP also. Does NAV & NIS not scan SSL connections?
