Hi all,
In a state of panic/paranoia I decided to run Power Eraser (came with Norton Antivirus Online for me) despite both Norton and Malwarebytes not detecting anything. The scan was taking forever to complete after the restart required at the beginning for rootkit detection, so in the meantime I did more research on NPE, and I learned that it's not a good idea to use it if you're not an expert.
1. I right clicked the task bar icon for NPE while it was scanning after the original rootkit reboot, and in the pop up menu I clicked the program name (usually when you do this with a browser, it opens up a new window). It asked me if NPE was allowed to make changes, I clicked yes, it took me to an End User License Agreement, I clicked okay, and it gave me an error saying it was already running. I think I restarted it with the right click thing, but see below at the asterisks.
2. I then went to Task Manager, and ended the process for NPE.
3. I have rebooted my computer twice after ending the process, and everything is running normally. I never got any results from the scan, so I'm assuming I successfully aborted it.
***Before I realized NPE came with my antivirus, I did download it from the site. However, I clicked that I did not agree to the license agreements, and deleted this download. It never got to the main screen like it did with the one from my antivirus, so it never started a scan. It does not show up in my programs, so I'm pretty sure the download did not install. The only scan I ran came from the NPE that's part of my antivirus already.
I'm assuming that I successfully aborted the scan, and that I should be fine. However, I'm a very anxious individual. Is there anything else I have to do to make sure the Power Eraser scan truly was aborted?
I realize that I sound like an idiot and I'm probably fine, but I'm honestly pretty frightened. Any help is appreciated.
