Can someone explain why this happens?

Occasionally, during startup, Windows will load to the desktop, and stop - ie, no system tray apps will load, OR windows will load properly, and as soon as the norton tray icon is loaded, then windows ceases to laod the remainder applications.

Usually to fix this, simply rebooting the PC solves the problem, and upon shutdown, I always get the ccSVcHst.exe is not responding... bla bla cancel or end process dialog box, which brings me to conclude that it is the cause of the problem.

Can anyone shed light on why it does this?

*If it maks any difference, I have autoprotect set to load at startup.

I’m not sure what’s causing the startup hang, but I can shed some light on ccSvcHst.exe not responding on shutdown.

From what I understand, ccSvcHst.exe manages several different processes inside NIS/NAV.  When Windows shuts down, it sends a close command to ccSvcHst.  ccSvcHst, in turn, shuts down all the processes that it is managing.

Windows gives a very short amount of time for applications to shut down.  Because NIS/NAV deal with files on a low-level, it’s important that they shut down properly to prevent data loss.  Sometimes this can take longer than Windows has allowed.  Since Windows wants the process to be shut down, and it has not, it brings up the dialog saying that ccSvcHst is not responding.  What Windows is really saying is that ccSvcHst is not responding as quickly as Windows would like.

In rare cases, a processes managed by ccSvcHst may have an issue and will not shut down properly.  This can also cause the Windows dialog on shutdown.

The ccSvcHst issue probably has nothing to do with your Windows startup issue.

Ken,

This is less than reassuring.

If it's true that "it's important that they shut down properly to prevent data loss", then what are we supposed to do when the dialogue appears and the times up?

And, if in "rare cases, a processes managed by ccSvcHst may have an issue and will not shut down properly", what happens to that file?  And if that file is used in the boot-up process, how will that impact boot-up?

And since most examination processes are governed by the same algorithms, won't that mean the same files will always be at the end of the shut down queue and increasingly likely to be damaged during the shut down?

So Ken_L,

if the cancel/end process dialog box comes up, we should cancel, wait, and try shutting down again?

Tray icon and main UI fail to load, when try to open main UI from shortcut, only the "uiStub.exe" load for a moment, then nothing happens.

no tray icon and cannot open main ui  problem persist, still no fix nor admit the problem. is restart windows the only fix?:smileymad:

Are you using Threatfire by chance?

Yes and are you using any PC maintance tools?

  1. Run>msconfig>startup>check if ccSVChst is there
  2. Run>services>enable all Symantec/Norton related services and set startup to automatic

orangedog, I’m just placing a guess here, but if you disable Email / Message Scanning does the problem go away? If so, we are working on a fix that should be available fairly soon.

not sure, since this problem does not happen every time nav starts, will try to see if Message Scanning disabled still have it or not.

Hello orangedog,

Did you have any previous Symantec software prior to installing the 2009 product?

Do you or did you have any other Security Software installed prior to or during the installation of the 2009 product?

Hi tech-sponge,

If you are using NIS 2009, try testing it with "Early Load" turned off.

If NIS 2008, turn off autoprotect at startup.

Let us know the results.

Thanks.
