Are there any known problems with NIS 2011 and the Steam Platform? I'd like to know before trying their free-to-play game, Team Fortress 2.
Thanks for letting me know! :)

I checked this entry earlier and found it was safe as far as viruses are concerned. However, I'm curious as to whether or not the program has known conflictions with NIS. All I'm waiting on is verification from someone who has used, or tested the program. I doubt there's anyone here who uses this thing, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
In any case, thanks for replying quickly. :)
Sure, I use Steam - buy most of my games from there. There has never been any conflict with NIS. There shouldn't be any with that particular game either.
Hello kyle
I'm an online gamer, but I haven't used Steam. However, my son who plays the newer versions of COD which I think uses Steam has N360 and has no problems with that. I would venture a guess and say that there shouldn't be any problem using Steam and NIS 2011 as long as you use the official Steam program and that the firewall knows when Steam has an update.

Yeah, the firewall creates "allow all" rules for the Steam executable the first time it is run, so it can update at will whenever needed.
Thank you so much! One more question: does Steam run all the time, or can I choose when it runs? I don’t want it to be performing background tasks all the time.

Hi Kyle,
Are you asking does Steam run all the time like NIS runs all the time? My guess would be that it will be quiet just like NIS but will phone home from time to time to see it there's any news, just like NIS. Windows does the same thing, as do most other programs in one way or another. If this isn't your question please try again and I'll try again. As a housekeepiing request please click on one of the messages that helped solve your problem so that others will not stop by to try to fix what isn't broken any more. Thanks
Yes, that’s what I’d like to know. The thing is, others in my household have problems with “memory hogs” besides essentials like Norton and Windows. I don’t want to add anything that would decrease the the computer’s speed and, in turn, bother others who use the machine.

Kyle,
If it is as well behaved as the 'essentials' there should be no problem. All of you can expect a bit of a slowdown when any of them are doing something essential in the background. Updates, scans, etc., will require resources. When it is a bit of a bother to wait for the screen to refresh it might be time for a soda break or maybe even a conversation with a person [ducking]
Remembering computers that only had floppy drives and the delays then allow me to appreciate the progress that has been made. And to get just as frustrated that it 'still' isn't fast enough.
Thanks for making the thread solved
Hello Kyle
Maybe you can find out more about Steam from this website. It looks like they have a Forum there also. You probably can get a lot of answers from that Forum. Thanks.
I personally have no problem with it. My dad, however, is a "speed demon" of computers, so to speak. It has to be consistently fast or the computer has something wrong wth it, or is just "bad." All problems come to me when he thinks something is wrong because I make sure the computer stays in shape. In doing so, he doesn't want background programs running besides essentials.
Interestingly enough, I've been all over the official site for info. Can't find it there. I think I'll just give the program an install and check it out from there.

It's up to the user. There is an option to start Steam with Windows, but you can uncheck that if you want, and start it manually whenever you want, and close it down whenever you want too. It does not need to be running when you are not playing a game. It doesn't take any noticable resources running either, but it is entirely up to the user.
