still have problems accessing internet through IE after NIS removed Trojan.FakeAV

My son contracted  Trojan.FakeAV on his laptop (IE8 and Windows 7) and NIS detected and removed it.  He has not been able to browse the web in IE8 (his only browser) ever since.  After looking through the forums here, I located a similar post and that problem was resolved by resetting the browser settings.  I tried that with no success.  Norton Chat help was also not able to help me.  Has anyone else, on these boards, run into the same problem?  Any help that could be offered would be much appreciated.  Thank you in advance.
