Stopping full system scan takes very long time

Running Norton Antivirus (using the Support -> About option, it indicates v18.1.0.37) on Vista Home Premium SP2 on a system with a Core 2 Duo E6300 (1.86 GHz) CPU and 1 GB of memory.  I would expect that running a full system scan will generally consume most of the resources of this class system, however I've noticed that if I try to manually stop this scan, I'll get the dialog asking me if that's really what I want fairly quickly, but it will take a *long* time (several minutes) before the scan will actually stop and present the 'finish' dialog.  I presume the scan is actually still running during this delay since the system is still very sluggish and the hard drive activity light is still just about on solid.

I guess my question is, what sort of response should I expect before the request actually gets the scan engine's attention and it stops?  Is the behavior such that the scan will complete the file it's working on before it will stop (if so, I can't imagine there is any single file on the system that would take several minutes to scan by itself, and that I happen to be hitting a file like this every time I try to manually stop a scan)?  Is there any sort of configuration setting to improve this (perhaps related to the system priority at which the full scan runs)?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.
