Use the Norton Removal Tool ; you get to re-install your Norton Security Product after re-starting after using the N.R.T..

Let us know if this works.

Hey Floating_Red,

Thanks for your response. I was wary of an un-install on security grounds in case the problem was triggered by an external app and only flagged by NIS despite what the file path was pointing to. I use some open source graphics and commercial video edit apps which are miserably unstable at times and prone to 'phantom' error calls and other...unexpected behaviours.

Anyway, your fix seems to have worked (half a dozen restarts pretty much confirms this). It's taken out my wireless network, (something I should have expected) but that's a minor issue compared to the daily gamble on startup I've been having recently. At least I KNOW I'm reasonably secure rather than hoping I am.

Cheers.
