This problem had been discussed several years ago, but there was no clear solution, so I am starting a new thread.
A few weeks back I upgraded to Norton Security and in the process of installing it, I needed to run the Norton Removal Tool to remove my older version of NIS. The removal and install went fine - I thought - but after that, whenever I boot the computer, I get the "Device Failed to Connect" sound three times at boot-up (that duhduhduh sound). I checked the device manager and nothing is showing as a problem. In my printer file, my wireless printer "needs attention" - whether it is turned on or not. When it is on and connected, I still get that sound. (I actually seem to have 2 versions of that printer so one is always not connected - might that be the issue?)
I chatted with Support and they say that there is NO way that Norton caused this - yet it happened IMMEDIATELY after I installed the Norton Security - on the bootup following the install, it happened. Does this new NS try to alert you to a discconected device, I wonder?
I was hoping that someone might have a suggestion or idea on a fix. Or - if this is just a phanton sound, since nothing seems to be disconnected - is it OK to just allow it to be an annoyance. Will it cause any harm in the long run?
I have a Win 7 64 bit running Home Premium and just installed the latest version of Norton Security.
I too have encountered this exact same problem each time I’ve used the most recent release of the Norton Removal Tool in order to remove NIS2012 – something which I’ve attempted three times now trying to attain a satisfactory NIS2011 to NIS2012 upgrade installation. And each time I’ve ultimately ended up having to restore the entire Windows7 system environment from an image backup that was made prior to initially installing the NIS2012 update.
I’m very curious to read what the support staff has to say about this one…
It seems to help prevent the problem if the program is removed first through add/remove. It may also depend on the manufacturer or specific drivers, which makes it tricky to fix. Any software can affect other drivers. Those of us that have been around for a while try to troubleshoot the problem before going to the removal tool.
Just updated to 19.1.1.3, but I had to use the Norton removal/reinstall tool as there was no way I could get it update to get the toolbar addon for Firefox 7 working. After that everything is fine with Firefox toolbar.
Then I noticed at computer startup that I was getting some strange sound that would repeat about 3 times after the computer had booted to the desktop. After checking out the various Microsoft sounds I found it was the sound for "Device Failed to Connect".
Looking through these forums I found references to the same problem, but no solutions.
Then searching on the internet I came across a reference that said the Norton removal tool can damage the registry, and indeed as the article states I had the little yellow marks against "portable devices" F, G, H, I in the device manager.
I remember getting that sound when I had trouble upgrading NIS 2011 from a trial version of NIS 2010. The problem seems to be associated with the online file backup feature that was packaged with the trial version.
If I left the online back up (which I never used) installed but removed all the other Norton stuff... I didn't get those strange sounds.
