Hi Gremar
Support for vista has not been dropped but XP will go that way early next year.
The security software you mention is ok if they are the free version if they have real time protection which can conflict with Norton they will show up in processes so can you launch the task manager and click on the process tab, click on the description tab to sort that column A-Z and check what’s running?
Have you noticed any thing strange happening on the computer and/or is it running slowly?
What error where you having when you upgraded to 2014?
What error messages are you getting now?
Check for windows updates manually and then recheck until there are no more updates restarting the computer as requested.
Try a Norton full scan in safe mode (see help and support from the start menu).
If you use Safe mode with networking it allows an internet connection so physically disconnect the internet, disable the wifi before booting into safe mode with networking as Norton appears to be disabled in safe mode only allowing a full scan. Then restart the computer.
Can you check on the computer clock that the following are correct?
The time?
The day?
The month?
The Year?
The time zone?
Its written like this because in the past people check the time only and one of the others is incorrect and is causing problems for the Norton product.
To check the above click on the clock in the task bar, on the dialogue box that opens click on, change date and time settings.
Check for updates
Restart the computer and check for Norton updates manually or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click, run live updates, and then recheck until there are no more updates restarting the computer as requested.
I realise you have mentioned that fix now runs for a long time but can you try the below it should take a few minutes and in my experance no more than 15 minutes.
Try running autofix by clicking the Norton icon, click support, click get support (or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click Get support) let it run then restart the computer. It should tell you if any items where fixed. If you get an error message about MBAM then just click on skip on the error screen.
Conflict in security software can be the cause of various issues even if the security software has been uninstalled the debris left on the system may not have caused problems until a Norton update has been installed.
Have you or have you ever had any other security software including any trial security software on the computer including Norton? If so, what is it?
Can you check in windows add/remove programmes, programme data and programme files for any security software that may have been bundled in a download?
What trial security software came with the computer?
Norton allows product user licences to be removed from the Norton account, so that user licence can be used again on the same or a different computer, if the current subscription is active.
While it should not be necessary if you are using the same computer when Norton is reinstalled with the same version or reverting back to an earlier version of the same product as Norton uses a unique number from the main board of the computer to identify the subscription status for that computer.
If you have changed the hard drive or reinstalled the operating system then putting the licence in the trashcan (bin) is recommended as Norton may referance or write some data on the hard drive.
The keys are locked to the product version, but not the versions with in the product; Norton allows different versions with in the product to be on different computers for one subscription with more than one user licence.
Log into Norton management on the link below using your Norton account email address and password, click on my account, click on product details, identify the licence you want to remove by the computers name under device name, on that line click on the trashcan (bin) this will free up the key but it may have a time delay before it becomes available.
