Stuck on fix in progress nis 2013 and 2014

Hello , NIS 2013 (UPDATED TO 2014 to try to fix problem), Vista 64 bit

Been away for a week. Started up PC and I was met with An exclamation mark. "YOUR COMPUTER NEEDS TO BE SCANNED FOR VIRUSES AND SPYWARE"  message,

CLICKED on "FIX NOW"----"FIX IN PROGRESS APPEARS" but never comp"ERROR DURING SCANletes.....pressing on QUICK SCAN ...results in errror ERROR DURING SCAN "

I updated to 2014 by auto-updating it(UPDATED DEFINITIONS UNTIL NO MORE LEFT TO UPDATE..Live update works by the way). I am reluctant to uninstall and re-install by myself as before it will uninstall but when I went to my account it showed all 3 licences are used( NIS 2013 is on 2 other pc's without problems(running win 7 and win 8)

All machines have free version RUN ON DEMAND ONLY (no automatic updating enabled) MALWAREBYTES and SUPERANTISPYWARE.

Also installed are SPYWAREBLASTER which I believe just interacts with browser.

Spoke to CHAT who suggested I remove Malwarebytes and others...But NIS isn't sufficent on it's own (Malwarebytes catches the occassion PUP that though seem harmless NIS totally misses)

Is there a solution to this...is it that suppport for vista has been dropped?? Qickscans by MALWAREBYTES AND SUPERANTISPYWARE SHOW NO INFECTIONS

Presently NIS 2014 ver 211018 installed

Thanks

Hi Gremar

Support for vista has not been dropped but XP will go that way early next year.

The security software you mention is ok if they are the free version if they have real time protection which can conflict with Norton they will show up in processes so can you launch the task manager and click on the process tab, click on the description tab to sort that column A-Z and check what’s running?

Have you noticed any thing strange happening on the computer and/or is it running slowly?

What error where you having when you upgraded to 2014?

What error messages are you getting now?

Check for windows updates manually and then recheck until there are no more updates restarting the computer as requested.

Try a Norton full scan in safe mode (see help and support from the start menu).

If you use Safe mode with networking it allows an internet connection so physically disconnect the internet, disable the wifi before booting into safe mode with networking as Norton appears to be disabled in safe mode only allowing a full scan.  Then restart the computer.

Can you check on the computer clock that the following are correct?

The time?

The day?

The month?

The Year?

The time zone?

Its written like this because in the past people check the time only and one of the others is incorrect and is causing problems for the Norton product.

To check the above click on the clock in the task bar, on the dialogue box that opens click on, change date and time settings.

Check for updates

Restart the computer and check for Norton updates manually or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click, run live updates, and then recheck until there are no more updates restarting the computer as requested.

I realise you have mentioned that fix now runs for a long time but can you try the below it should take a few minutes and in my experance no more than 15 minutes.

Try running autofix by clicking the Norton icon, click support, click get support (or right click the Norton icon in the task bar and click Get support) let it run then restart the computer.  It should tell you if any items where fixed.  If you get an error message about MBAM then just click on skip on the error screen.

Conflict in security software can be the cause of various issues even if the security software has been uninstalled the debris left on the system may not have caused problems until a Norton update has been installed.

Have you or have you ever had any other security software including any trial security software on the computer including Norton?  If so, what is it?

Can you check in windows add/remove programmes, programme data and programme files for any security software that may have been bundled in a download?

What trial security software came with the computer?

Norton allows product user licences to be removed from the Norton account, so that user licence can be used again on the same or a different computer, if the current subscription is active.

While it should not be necessary if you are using the same computer when Norton is reinstalled with the same version or reverting back to an earlier version of the same product as Norton uses a unique number from the main board of the computer to identify the subscription status for that computer.

If you have changed the hard drive or reinstalled the operating system then putting the licence in the trashcan (bin) is recommended as Norton may referance or write some data on the hard drive.

The keys are locked to the product version, but not the versions with in the product; Norton allows different versions with in the product to be on different computers for one subscription with more than one user licence.

Log into Norton management on the link below using your Norton account email address and password, click on my account, click on product details, identify the licence you want to remove by the computers name under device name, on that line click on the trashcan (bin) this will free up the key but it may have a time delay before it becomes available.

Intesec----

Thanks for a detailed explanation...When I stared PC this morning I had the same problem. Turned off PC....Came home this evening , turned on PC and still had the exclamation mark...

HOWEVER it allowed me to do a quick scan (I have now done two and will do a full scan) and that seems to have soloved the problem....

However maybe your post should be a sticky????  Also maybe support should be made aware that ON DEMAND scanners from Malwarebytes and Superantispyware are fine.... I argued with them that as they were not running then they wouldn't be interfering....they were however persistant that it was my ON DEMAND scanners that were the problem.

Wonder how many have removed them and are now vunerable from certain types of attack.

Oh and during my attempts yesterday I had re-started/ turned off/on PC several times , but nothing helped

THat was a bit moany......I just wanted to thank you for your detailed (should be a sticky) contribution...

Cheers

Just now doing a quick scan....looking in CUSTOM SCAN shows it is running and HDD activity light is flashing...but it never completes and there is no QUICK SCAN user interface...qick and FULL scans stop responding

Hi, Gremar. It's possible that during the upgrade to the latest version, that something may have become corrupted.

If the problem doesn't resolve, then you may need to use the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool, which will install a fresh version.

The link is here  http://www.norton.com/nrnr

It's a fairly quick process, and gives you the option to retain your settings.

Hello yesterday rtan sfc/scannow in cmd whaich fixed one or two win things.

Uninstall nis via control panel, restarted pc , ran norton remaval tool, restarted pc. Installed nis 2013 , installed nis 2014 (couldn't find 2014 in english as I'm in scandanavia and it keeps defaulting to scandanavian)

Updtaed live-update many times , restarting as neccessary.

Ran Full-scan ...hung twice....closed NIS as not responding (note scanning for compresse files is OFF) . When it restarted it showed that it was stilling running in Cuystom-scan . Restarted full-scan and scann jumped forward which confirms it was still running. However when scan completed (it showed it was on my 2nd HDD) not as many files appeared to have been scanned as I waould have thought (approx 500000 files)

Ran Supprt/autofix with result below.....anyone any ideas?? A bad installation again...IS it worth running the  REPAIR-TOOL or it the a bit drastic...any help/guidance appreciated

Norton Internet Security
21.1.0.18
Windows (TM) Vista Home Premium

Norton Autofix Results: 1 item(s)
Installation :: Success

well I got a support agent who was prepared to help and he spent some time on the case. Is it fixed??

Well it seems as long as I don't do anything else on the pc it completes the scan,,,If I do anything like open a webpage or two , then it's likely to stop responding :-(

they ran fixtdss but nothing was found...

Hi Gremar,

As far as I know, while NIS is scanning one must not work on the computer... that's why it is advisable to schedule the scan during idle time.

Rainbow_2    you sure?????? I have always browsed internet whilst running a quick-scan with NIS 2013...obviously no games etc

You SURE ?????

As I said, as far as I know... was/am I wrong?

Edit: Does anyone know for sure?

... And as far as I know also  -  If you start the scan manually you can use the computer, but if you receive new virus definitions and NIS starts an auto quick scan it will stop while you use your system and start again when your system returns to idle.

Full scans have a setting to only run when idle which you can change if you like.

Gremar

Scan issues can sometimes have something to do with the physical condition of the hard drives. You checked the Windows system files with the sfc scan. A chkdsk run may be in order.

To check your hard disk, click on the Windows Start button. In the search box type CMD. Right click on cmd.exe and click on run as administrator. In the command prompt type "chkdsk c: /r"  without the quotes. A message will come up asking if you want to check the disk on the next restart. Answer 'Y'. Reboot and the check disk will run before Windows starts up. This check will check the file system as well as the physical disk surface. This scan can take a long time, depending on the size of your hard drive.

Gremar,

It may be advantagous for you to set up your NIS Scheduler to run your full scans overnight or at a time when your PC is always idle.

I'm running Norton 360 but I'm assuming that NIS has the same Scheduler available.  I have my full scans scheduled nightly at 1:30am.  After the scan is complete. Norton returns the PC to Sleep mode which can be selected from the pull-down menu on the Scheduler setup page.

Many thanks to all for the replies....I run quick-scans probably once a day...full scan  once every two weeks or so...usually when I am out.

It just that it is not behaving like it use to...however it is NIS 2014 that's reinstalled..

I will run check disk tonight and hpe it doesn't kill my hdd if that is the probem...BTW the last Norton rep was very helpful and the couple of times he restarted the PC and ran Quick scan, it did appear to work as it should.

Again thanks to all for the support !!!!!! :-)

just a thought ...can out of date gpu drivers cause antivirus suites to hang....even if custom scan still show scan to be running??

Anything is possible with a Windows PC. Graphics drivers have been known to cause seemingly unrelated issues.
