I just got off a live chat and was told that if I renew my subscription to NIS 2007 the subscription would only be valid for one computer. The only way to cover my three computers would be to upgrade to NIS 2008.

Is this correct?

I am asking this because I had previously posted some questions about NIS 2007 vs. NIS 2008 and got some good feedback, but failed to ask this question.

Thanks for the advice.

My video editing platform is rather complex  and I like to research products before installing them to be sure they will all “play nice”.

NIS2007 actually performed well for me (except for the constant “LUCOMS” issue I had posted previously).

No, this information is dead wrong. You can take your NIS 2007 cd to each computer and install it on each... But beware, if you install it on 2 computers the subscription days are divided by the two, each getting 182.5 days. If you install it on 3 computers, then each computer will split the subscription days. I know this because I installed Norton Internet Security 2007 (aka NIS 07 OR NIS 2007) and it wound up splitting the days between us. And this chat log verifies that.

No, you are the one thats dead wrong.......

A 3-computer lisc is exactly that a lisc to use the software on 3 comptuers..... it doesn't change the time!!!!!!

Only guess I can make is that since your uncle has 2007 product then that means it has been renewed at least once.   So it sounds like when his 90 day trial was up instead of renewing the key that he had he got another one.    So least feb the key his software was using was changed from the one on the box to one that made it go til feb 2009.

Now you got the box and CD and installed the software using the key on the box.... wrong key...  you are using a 90 days key.

So get the correct key from your uncle and both subscripts will end in feb 2009.

And I know you already did it from another thread but tell your uncle to download 2008 product and install it, it won't change the expiration date.

Let's be clear -- that is not what happens with a 3 user version of NIS 2007 and I'd be amazed if it happened with a single user version.

With a 3 user version of NIS 2007 when you install it on the first PC it locks the expiry date to that installation date for the other 2 users even if you have not yet installed it on those PCs.

So if you install on the second PC one month after the first installation the second will run for 11 months -- therefore if you installed it on the second PC after 6 months both PCs would expire in 6 months but it would not be due to "sharing"; it would be due to the first PC already having used up 6 months and there being 6 months left on the subscription.

I can assure you that this is the case since I have been through this several times with NIS and with N360 on up to 3 PCs.

As for renewing a 3 user subscription only giving a 1 user licence I can't comment on this because I have so far never renewed subscriptions but bought the new versions retail.

As for the agent in your chat session he also said:

<< Agent(Sat Jun 14 14:05:58 PDT 2008)>Chris nothing like cutting into half, subscription cannot be done like that, lol >>

It's not unknown unfortunately for agents to be wrong but I know that Norton Staff here will follow up.

Power outage going off line.

huwyngr,

Thanks for your input. And, I hope your power returns soon!

To confirm, I do have a 3 user version of NIS 2007 (I am a firm believer of paying for my software) and I am aware of the expiration date relating to the first installation date since I did not have all three computers when I upgraded to NIS 2007. I fully understand and have experienced that and would not expect any time extension on computers 2 and 3.

However, I was surprised to hear from live chat that a subscription renewal would only cover one computer.

Perhaps it would just be easier for me to upgrade to NIS 2008 knowing it will be usable on all 3 machines. Hopefully it will “play nice” with my video editing platform. If for any reason it does not, maybe I can roll back to 2007 on one machine.

Now for the question of the day: I’ve read a lot on the forums and the internet about installing NIS2008 and there seems to be some varied opinions (even from live chat). I’ve always been a “purist” when installing software, so what’s the verdict, just install 2008 over 2007 or go for 2007 removal and start with a clean install of 2008?

<< However, I was surprised to hear from live chat that a subscription renewal would only cover one computer. >>

Norton Staffers have posted on this and you might do a search but don't stop with your first find since there were some further clarifications.

In any case I've asked for clarification here in this thread so let's hope we get it soon.

When does your present subscription run out? If you can wait on until September that's when 2009 versions are due out but even if you have to get 2008 (which you would find much improved in performance and reduced interference) you get a free update to 2009 when it does come out .

I have 30 days remaining on my current subscription. I think I'll give the NIS 2008 a try and see what happens.

What is your preferred installation method?

Trouble free <gdr>

What version of WIndow are you using and what Service Packs applied?

Are the system & NIS trouble-free as far as you can tell?

The choice is between

  1. uninstalling NIS 2007 using Remove Programs and then installing NIS 2008
    or
  2. starting the installation of NIS 2008 and letting it detect NIS 2007 and remove it as part of the one operation.

Whichever you do, if you have data inside NIS that you want to retain -- like white lists and black lists; Spam settings if you are using the Norton Add-On, which I do, then find out how to save these by exporting and then reimporting them after the new installation is made -- I did not think of this and my wife and I are still busy rebuilding the blocked email lists.

Having said that I can't tell you how to do it -- I just looked in NIS 2008 and don't see anything obvious. Yet someone posted here how to do it.

If you have had any kind of problems with NIS 2007 I'd be inclined to follow method 1 in case you encounter an error situation which stops a full uninstall since I would anticipate more flexibiltiy in dealing with it including the use of the NRT utility.

When you get to start the installation of NIS 2008, if you are in VISTA then right mouse click on the file that starts up the installation, usually an exe file like the downloaded one or setup.exe on the CD, and select Run as Administrator. I've found this avoids some problems.

See what else others suggest -- and don''t forget Backup Backup Backup before you start.

Two computers are Windows XP Professional SP2. (I currently have the SP3 auto update blocked – I always wait on major releases to be sure the bugs are out.)  I am not aware of any issues with NIS 2007 and the remainder of the system is trouble-free and stable.

Computer number three is Vista Home Premium; SP1 has NOT been installed yet. Computer is stable and no issues with NIS 2007.

I found, downloaded and saved a Norton “migration tool” which is supposed to save the anti-spam settings; unfortunately the instructions for using it are not very clear.

And yes, I regularly back up to an external hard drive at least four times per week and always prior to a major installation.

I’m leaning toward uninstalling NIS 2007 – for some reason I always feel that method gives a cleaner installation, but I’ll see what others have to say.

Thanks for your time and advice – much appreciated.

I think we are on the same wavelength especially about uninstalling.

Maybe someone will chip in about the migration tool you mention -- I don't think I remember that one.

I'm not certain that Run as Administrator is on the VISTA Home Premium but easy to find out and if it is not then log into the Full Administrator and install from there?

Why not Upgrade anyway to N.I.S. 2008?  I would advise you to because it is better than N.I.S. 2007.
