Subscription Renewal Question

Hey guys,

Having read this thread by Tony Weiss  http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=Announcements&thread.id=12, the differences between renewal and upgrade are quite clear.

Still I have some unresolved issues and would appreciate your help in claryfing them.

I'm a Norton customer for two years now, running NIS09 (2x1-year subscription for 1 PC, which ends 1/10/09) and Norton System Works basic edition.

I want to renew my NIS09 subscription.  That means, to continue running my NIS09- 1 PC licence for 1 more year.  The price for that renewal from Symantec store is at $54.99.

At the same time the Product Upgrade price-that is, for NIS09- 3 PC licences for 1 more year, is at $45.99.

My first question is why?  Why should a renewal of an existing subscription cost more than an upgrade?  Well, one could say that I should get the upgrade and not the renewal.  But if this happens I loose my remaining days all the way to October 1st.

Secondly, I would like to state that these both prices are quite different in the Greek site of Symantec ( http://www.symantecstore.com/dr/sat5/ec_main.entry25?page=GRUpgradeLanding&client=Symantec&sid=27684&CUR=978&DSP=&PGRP=0&ABCODE=&CACHE_ID=0), with HUGH differences upwards.

Specifically, the renewal costs are not to be found anywhere on the Greek site, and the upgrade costs are 51.99EUR, which with today's exchange rates are about $74.  Why? This is not acceptable by me, as a customer.

Could anyone tell me please if I can renew my NIS09 from the US site without any issues whatsoever. I would really appreciate it.

I consider the $74 price for NIS09 a rip-off, and I'm not willing to renew under these circumstances.  I cannot afford to pay this amount of money for NIS09 or for anything else for that matter.  These are very difficult times for everyone, including me.

I mean, $54.99 is expensive enough for me.  Otherwise, although I would prefer to keep NIS09, I'll be forced to look for alternatives.  I will have no choice.

Thank you very much in advance.

Hi delph,

Thanks for your reply.  My bad..let me get this straight..The prices I mention, are the fixed prices as seen at the Symantec US and Greek sites respectively.

No credit card involved yet...because I didn't but anything.  These above mentioned prices are as Advertised on Symantec Site.

There is no way that my credit card company will ever charge me this much difference.  For example, if I was to buy from the US site and charge my credit card for the exact amount of $54.99, then the exhange rate that my bank would charge would be around the official exchange rate, i.e  for an official rate of 1 USD=0.717566EUR, the $54.99 would officially be 39EUR.

I would then expect my bank to charge me max. at around 40-41EUR.  It's not the first time that I would buy a product in USD and actually pay in EUR.  See what I mean?

For example, I recently bought WinPatrol Plus.  This product does not have another site except its US site.  The price tag on the site was for $19.99.  I bought with my credit card in USD, accepted the charges during the procedure for $19.99, and when the bill came home I was actually charged for 15EUR  (around 0.75 rate, at the time).

This is my query...How come for the same product without applying exchange rates there is so huge price difference.  The prices at the Greek site should be around 39EUR.  Not 51EUR....Because 51EUR are $71, and not $54.99....See?

Hope that clears it out.

Thanks.

Hi, car825,

The Automatic Re-Newal will be "stuck" to your Product Key, which means, any computer that you put your Product Key in to will have the same "Remaining Days" as the computer you first entered that Product Key on.  Does this answer your question?

No eflection on floatin red but I think he may have misinterpreted your question.

He is correct in stating that the clock count down starts for a subscription when you install on the first PC of a multi PC set and that applies to a first time as well as to a renewal.

But I'm not positive that when you renew what had been installed on 3 PCs but is now only going to be used on 2 PCs that the central database counts down one PC and leaves you with a spare installation you can make.

If it does not then when you remove an installation from a computer all you have to do is get in touch with Customer Support and they can remove one PC from your records there and so allow you to go ahead with a third installation (that would be flagged as a 4th otherwise)

I am pretty certain that this is the position but I may be wrong! So I'll flag this thread for one of the Symantec Staff -- names in red -- to clarify and then we will be sure.

Or of course you can contact Customer Support yourself and ask them since they deal with all subscription matters while here we deal with the technical ones.

To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there.

You can choose CHAT or Email; phone may have a long wait time.

Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.

Hope that helps -- I'll flag the thread anyway but there may not be a reply until after the weekend.

Thanks for the additional information.  Right now I don't need the extra activation.  I had been using a single laptop, so there were two activations left. Then out of the blue my laptop started giving me trouble so I bought a new one. I may try to fix the old one in which case I would still use the activation. But the process got me thinking about how the auto renewal worked when you change PCs. If it assumes that your PCs last forever, well that's not the best approach.

Ok – Let’s see what Symantec have to say and file it away for future reference …

I think I understand the situation, but I'd like to clarify:

- Computer A, B, and C have NIS 2009 installed, computer D does not

- Computer C is not used anymore, and is stashed in a closet somewhere (OK, that part I'm making up:smileywink: )

- On Computer A, the subscription is renewed (either manually or automatically)

Did I capture the situation correctly? And your question is whether the "up to 3 PCs" limit for the license is still applied to computers B and C, even though you don't use one of them? Yes it is.

However, if you want to install on Computer D, just uninstall from one of the other computers and then proceed with install on Computer D. If you have any problems, contact our customer support. They can resolve these types of problems easily.

Thanks for clarifying – I was just not sure enough on whether or not there was even a possibility that uninstalling from one of the three had any effect, or even a possibility of affecting, the record of how many installations had been used.

Peter, thanks !

That is a good decision. No technical difference between the Standard and Deluxe versions. Just the number of devices you can protect.

Just having the one product also makes it easier to manage. Only one subscription key to worry about at renewal time.

FYI   Either product would have worked for both operating systems.

Just read the fine print , need to get Deluxe because one machine is W7 , the other W10 - I'll save roughly $15.00.

thanks again !!!!

Ubermax

thanks Floplot, Peterweb , and Yank - your combined comments helped a lot - today Amazon is showing Norton Standard for 1 machine at around $20.00 which seems pretty good ; a side x side of features for Std vs Deluxe is pretty much identical as far as I can see .

I have more confidence updating our 2 laptops one x one with Norton Std. this go around unless any of you feel that Deluxe has a technical edge over Std. - $40.00 for two machines is still pretty good I feel compared to MSRP .

thanks for your time !!

Hello

Please do not enter the new key until just before it expires. If you enter it early, you will lose what ever time is left on the old account.

Thanks.

Amazon is now offering Security Deluxe ( 5 machines ) for $19.99 , some questions :

           1. That's a big difference from the current Norton online price ; is it the same product or is it just that Amazon gets a volume discount ?

           2. If I purchase from Amazon, will I nevertheless be registered with Norton and get annual subscription renewal reminders as well as all the other benefits of being registered with Norton ?

I'm asking these questions because , since buying our machines with Norton pre-installed , I've always renewed through the Norton website .

Thanks again to those who respond .

Ubermax

1. The price difference is just marketing. Amazon feels they can still make money at that price. You win.

2. There is no difference in how your subscription is handled. It is just as if you had purchased from Norton.

NOTE. If you are going to purchase other than from Norton, be sure you go into your Norton Account and turn off the Automatic Renewal option for all your subscriptions. If you do not, you will be charged for the renewal, even if you have purchased a new product key. Once you install the new product, you can enable the Automatic Renewal for that subscription if that is what you want. Although, you now see that is it much less expensive to shop around and buy new from a reputable retailer. In which case you will want to turn off the Automatic renewal.

Thanks again Yank , so I purchase from Amazon or even Staples , get a download key/link , download onto one machine and then go to my second machine ; wouldn't I just use the key/link on this machine , not sure what you mean by "use your Norton's Management function" ??

Don

Yes you can just enter the key into the 2nd machine. Where the Management features come in handy is if you are adding a family member's computer that is not located with/near you. You are able to send an email from the Norton Management web site to the family member. They can then follow the instructions in that email to install a pre activated copy of the software, so you do not have to give them the key or your Norton Account details.

Hello

You use the Management Function to send the new product download to the 2nd machine so it can be installed on the 2nd machine. After you install Norton Security on your computer, go to Help on the main page of the Program. You will see listed, Add a Device. You click that and follow directions. It will tell you how to install the program onto your other devices. The Norton Security program is referred to as a Service. I don't want to give too much information so that I don't confuse you.

If you can, I would try to avoid buying it from Staples. I know they used to put the Logo from Staples onto the Norton product. That would cause a delay of program updates  I know they used to do that, not sure if they still do that or not.

Thanks.
