Suggestion - Better idle detection

I have a problem with the idle detection. It does not detect the idle state of my computer, it detects only that no input has been done for a specified amount of time.

Example 1: I go to bed and the computer performs a full system backup (it would take about 5 hours). But unfortunately Norton Antivirus "thinks" that the computer is idle and slows down my backup. Next morning the backup is not ready, because of the full system idle scan (there are about 6 millions files on my workstation).

Example 2: I start the compilation of a big project. Again the full system idle scan interferes and is lengthening the compilation.

It would be nice, to detect whether or not the computer is really idle, e.g. to monitor also the CPU and disk for heavy usage. The minimal solution would be to implement a button "No idle scans for the next <n> hours".

Or you could have just turned off idle time full scan :D

Hi shridhar

The OP could have a separate backup program which is doing backups. It's not definite that the user is using N360. The OP can turn off the idle full scans and schedule them to run weekly at a suitable time. However the idle quick scans would still run.

I am using Norton Antivirus 2010 (I wrote this in my first post). Of course I know some workarounds, e.g. to increase the "Idle Time Out". But this is not optimal: I can forget to reset the value afterwards.

Hi Siggie

The Idle Full System Scan runs once a week, 7 days from the time when the last Idle Full System Scan completed. If the Idle Full System Scans aren't convenient for you, you can turn off that feature and you can schedule the weekly scans for a convenient time. However, the quick idle scans would still occur since they are for the safety of your computer.

Does NAV 2010 have the Quiet Mode for User Specified Programs option, similar to NIS 2010? If so, you could add your backup and project applications to this list. Norton will suspend it’s background activities when it detects your listed programs are running.

Idle Time does look at CPU usage to start an Background Task.  The Tasks are not started just because Idle Time state is true; one of the triggers is that the CPU usage has to be below a certain percent for a certain length of time.  I believe this is currently under 10% for 10 seconds (which is a long time in CPU time frames).

Thank's! "Silent Mode" and "Quiet Mode" do the trick!

I am using NAV for a lot of years, but I never before looked at the explanation of these modes. I guessed that these modes would only suppress program messages. But they also suspend a lot of background activities.

I added Casper, Robocopy, CL,... to the list of "Quiet Mode Programs". This is the solution of my problem.

Thank's again!
