Suggestions For Norton Site

Hope I'm not overstepping anyone here or posting this in the wrong forum by saying this but, I've got to give my opinion on the Norton site.

It's really confusing and convoluted from beginning to end. Due to my work I have to surf the web a lot. And  I've been doing it a long time so I'm comfortable with going to a new site and figuring out their system of categories pretty easily.  but this site has had me confused and frustrated from day one.

For  example when I have a question about a action blocked or an event that was detected - found by my Norton Internet Security,  I will come to the site by clicking a link either in the help menu when I can't find the help I need in there or a link from the interface.  It sends me to a page that has - say 50-75 choices (or links with text) - yet absolutely no wording in those choices that connects to the subject.

From there  It's a constant search that leads me to pages I don't need to look at. If' I'm lucky enough to find text that has the subject I'm looking for and I click on it (and here's where it's gets really frustrating) it sends me to another page with another 75 choices - yet AGAIN nothing on that page that has text that matches the last link I just clicked on!

WHY can't It just send you to the page that has the SUBJECT of the link? It makes no sense to me that I'm sent to a page with another 75 choices that do NOT pertain to the subject of the link I JUST CLICKED ON????

If I try typing in the search box it usually just sends me to the product page or if I'm lucky the news page where I can try other links that lead me right back to the product page - and I'm not typing the wrong question at least not all the time. I do try to search in different ways, or use different key words  and I still get sent to pages that don't have what I'm looking for.

IMO there way too many choices displayed that have nothing to do with the link I just clicked on. There doesn't seem to be much hierarchical organization or categorizing here. (other than the Norton Welcome navigation tab at the top of the page - but it still doesn't have all the categories it should)

I really like my Norton Internet Security program but if this site doesn't change, and clean up the confusion with the links then  I will not renew when the time comes because I can't get any answers to my questions.

btw this text manager doesn't work too well either. You can't change color, text size, font, bold, etc.... (and I don't have any java script errors here either so I know its not that)

We are always happy to answer any questions you may have right here on the forum.  You will be just about guaranteed a response, and if we can't answer it, we will knock on Symantec's door to send a rep to help.

Pippin,

Let me begin by saying that the Search system on the Forums is farkled at present. The people who run the system as well as Norton themselves are aware of this and hopefully it will be restored to what it was some time back.

On your specific point about listing: You are experienced in using websites and I wonder if you are using Booliean operatives to help?

For example try a search on your topic:

Suggestions For Norton Site

and then repeat it with the additon of the quotes which force "exact phrase"

"Suggestions For Norton Site"

and you will see the difference that may account for part of the problem you describe.

I was not aware that clicking on a topic in the HELP menu could bring you here -- I'ved never tried it!

Hope I'm not overstepping anyone here or posting this in the wrong forum by saying this but, I've got to give my opinion on the Norton site.

Yes huwyngr in the help menu on my antivirus product - I always try that first. In some of the sections it will have a link to the Norton site.

I have not used the boolean way of searching here. I didn't know I could. I will try it next time I'm searching. But the last time I was here I went ahead and saved the Norton Community Forums in my Windows -Favorites so that's how I got here this time.

I don't see how the boolean search style will help me out as far finding things but I will try. I still think it's going to send me to those same pages with all the choice links.....we'll see.

Thank you Floplot I was able to change the color this time and the bold works if I use ctrl-b but I couldn't get the font to change .  Maybe I have some java or other script issue? I don't see any warning notice in the bottom left of my screen which is what usually tells me if I'm experiencing that.  But I've sooo many issue with this BRAND NEW pc.......You wouldn't believe me if I told you how many errors I'm getting with Windows 7 on a daily basis.....maybe you can help with this question.

I've been working with the forum advisors at Microsoft for all the issues I'm having that show up in my event log. One of them told me yesterday that it could be because  I don't have the 2010 NIV. I clicked the link that brings you here and checks your pc to see if you have the most current version. I says I do. But I also checked the help/about menu on my Norton it says I have version 17.7.0.12 at the bottom it says copyright 1997-2009.

Doesn't this mean I have the 2009 version?

Hello Pippin

NIS 17.7.0.12 is the latest version of NIS 2010. It says 2009 as the copyright because the new version comes out in Sept.-Oct. usually. So NIS 2010 came out in Sept. of 2009.

To change the font, hit the little tab that says Font Family. If Win 7 gives you different Fonts, I believe they should be listed there, at least some of them should be listed. Hit the one you want to use and the name of the Font should then be listed like I just changed mine to Verdana in the middle of this post.

Once you leave the post and then come back to it, if you want to edit the post,  I see that it goes back to the default one.

It worked for me -- without the quotes I got pages and pages of results containing individual words and gave up looking for your first message but with the quotes I only got one result and it was a link to yours.

So by all means try it.

As I said unless they have fixed it the Search system is farkled, or was when I last tried, in that it will not search a single forum, e.g.. this one, even though you specify it..

Advanced Search is also useful in many cases but there is no longer a link to it on the same line as the search box but if you click on the Search button before you enter a search word it will then take you to a page where you can choose Advanced Search and there you can actually use Boolean searches by putting the words in specific boxes like With the Exact Phrase which is what the quotes do.

:smileyhappy:Ok Thanks so much Huwyngr!

This definitely gives me hope. I would try it right now but I'm so busy today. It's 11pm and I'm just getting to my email for today - I had an important deadline to make for a design contest so I'm trying to catch up now. I have a ton of replies to make so I will try this tomorrow. I've been trying to find out what this trojan was that kept  re-appearing in a pop up notice from NIS saying it blocked it. But when I go in to look at the details to see the source of where I was getting it it didn't say. It did say that it had been on my computer since a specific date. It hasn't happend since 4-5 days ago but before that it was occuring every day.

I also looked for the file for several days in my temporary internet files because thats where the details said it was located - even though it said it had been blocked - it also said it had been on my pc from a certain date.  Very confusing to say the least. I was going to check my registry but never got around to it.

I'll come back tomorrow. I need to find out the definition of a bunch of stuff. i.e. What is Actor and Actor PID? I also have more questions but have to find the right forum thread. thanks again for your advice. And yes, I had already found the Advance search not sure if I used it or not if I did - I didn't read the instructions - I have a bad habit of doing that at sites. I think I already know what they are going to say so I don't read it and just do my own thing....

Pippin,

First things first -- good luck with the contest. Let us know how you get on.

Others can help you better with any technical problems but please post them in the Forum dealing with the specific Norton Product you have -- Norton Internet Security I think you said.

And to save me posting it there when you do:

To get you the best advice, would you give us some more information about your system:

What version of Windows are you using including Service Packs and whether 32 bit or 64 bit as well as the Name and Version ID of the Norton product that you are using -- Help / About is where that is, in the format of nn.nn.nn.nnn

If you have the COMCAST version of Norton 360 / Security Suite and not the normal commercial version please be sure to tell us.

If you get any error messages please give the exact wording of them as well as any other background that could be helpful.

See you later

Hugh

Hi Hugh,

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

There are no SP's yet for this (there should be but there isn't)

My laptop is an HP Pavillion dv6 notebook

Intel dual core processor

2.2ghz

Norton version: 17.7.0.12

Pippin,

That was my boilerplate ....

Did you try the NIS/NAV Forum here for your technical questions?

Yes I did and sorry I thought you wanted it too - I thought you were going to answer  the question about having the right version of NIS

Hi Pippin:

You do have the latest version of NIS.  When you have a moment, a screen shot of what NIS found or blocked might be helpful in finding out wht is happening.  When you go to History, it will open up under "recent history."

You can click on that drop down to check quarantine, resolved threats and unresolved threats for more details.

When you do a screen print, you can paste it to Paint, save as a JPEG on your desktop, and then insert it using the "little green tree" in the reply editor.

Best wishes.

Hello Pippin

Here is a short tutorial about posting screen shots.

Working on it floplot - another "wierd" isssue I'm having with my Windows7. I switched over to my monitor screen and since then I cannot do a print screen. Don't know why because I few weeks ago I did the same thing and it was fine. I dl/installed "gadwin" but it will not work either. I'm using my laptop which is my backup pc - only this has Win7 and it has major issues  also having hardware issues. You cannot imagine the stress this is causing me - I've lost so much $ due to having to spend time on these issues instead of working. I spent hours today because I can't get the chkdsk.exe to work. Getting messages saying something is corrupt on the hardisk/VolumeShadowCopy and I should run chkdsk.exe. but when I do that I can't get it to work. I feel like I'm in the twilight zone nightmare!
