Let me start by saying I will not badger this question. I also undertsand that I am asking a question about an older product, and thus many will not be as familiar with it. But my hope is someone will know the answer

 

I just have a simple question to see if my system is running correctly

(I use Vista 32 bit home premium  PC with Vista service pack 2) NAV2008 (still)

 

I was looking in my windows task manager to see what process and services were running. I came across this service   Symantec Core LC

 

I noticed the status was "Stopped" as in not running.

When I checked the services it shows the start up type is "Manual"

 

Not knowing much about cmputers, thisconecerns me since it is a part of Norton shouldn't it be always running?

 

My Norton desk try icon shows green check mark (secure). When I check the Norton Control panel everything shows secure, Firewall, spyware, antvirus al ll show secure. Auto protect shows on. I can get updates and run scans. So basically it appears everything is running. I ran some Norton , malwarebytes, and spybot scans and all show clean

 

My questions:

1. SHOULD service Symantec Core LC be showing "stopped" in servies and task manager or Should it be always shown running ?

2. if it is NOT running, does that mean realtime protection has stopped?

3. Does Symantec CORE LC have anything to do with the security and protection functions (i.e antivirus/spyware, autoprotect) of the product?

BTW I checked it now while on the forums and it appears to be running, so is it part of the forum process?

Not sure or if this is related but Symantec Core LC seems to be connected with symlcsvc.exe which is in

C:\ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\SymantecShared\CCPD-LC

Notice in this folder there are :

symlcnet.dll  which is digitally sigend by Symantec

 

symlcrst.dll   which is NOT digitally signed by Symantec and also seems to have been modified today 4/14/10

symlcsvc.exe    Which is digitally signed by Symantec

symlctnk.dll  which is digitally signed by symantec

so not sure if that matters or if the one file not being signed by symantec matters

well did a little research right here on the forums and found something that pertains to part of my question

Looks like James Kaz from Symantec replied to another user who had concerns about Symantec Core LC set to manual.

Looks like that is the suggested setting. Mr Katz said that it when run when needed, but isn't it needed right away?

Now my question still is ( and I did not see this answer anywhere) Is Symantec Core LC responsible for the real time protection such as AutoProtect, Intrusion prevention, Antispyware etc? If it is, shouldn't it be on right away when the compuet boots up?

the fact that its not on right now for me, does that mean I'm NOT currently protected by my product?

My Norton panel all shows secure and green, but the Symantec Core LC is NOT shown as running. In task manager symlcsvc.exe is not shown at the time when Symantec Core LC is not running

What Processes should be showing to indicate that I'm currently protected?

As you can see in that thread you linked to, James had stated that the service when run when needed, which means at times it will NOT be running, which is what you're experiencing right now. 

 

Don't worry - if the program detects that something is wrong, it will alert you on the Main User Interface or through an error code. 

 

I think rather than worry that the product is not functioning and looking for reasons to suspect that the software is failing, you should update to newer protection through Norton Update Center, as it's going to leave you more vulnerable to newer attacks using an older version, rather than this service not being started. 

 

I look forward to your posts when you finally let us know you're on the 2010 products. :smileyvery-happy:

I will be getting NIS 2010 when my tax refund comes in  (yes I am that poor) and will have questions about that installation

99% sure I understand this, just 1 tiny point of clarification so I can mark as solved

Because I'm so stupid, let me just confirm with you please ( and then I will mark this as solved-

Am I correct  to understand that Symnantec Core LC is not responsible for my real time protection (thus not needing to run all the time?

And even though at times Symantec Core LC is NOT running, I am still being protected in the sense that the 2008 NAV product is suppose to function  like autoprotect, intrusion prevention ,etc? As long as my system tray icon shows green and secure right?

Symantec Core LC is only required to run during activation process. Support and some of the tools/patches that were deployed would set the Symantec Core LC to manual or automatic whenever it is required(only if it is required), and you can let that service as it is. Symantec Core LC won't be affecting the realtime protection in your Norton product and as long as Norton icon shows green status you are safe.

thanks Yogesh- So Symantec Core LC has nothing to do with the protection aspect of the Norton Function, if I am understanding correctly?

May I ask what is meant by "activation process'?

Activation Process:- Activating your Norton product by entering your Product key and registering it under your email address in the Norton Account, thus getting the subscription. You won't be able to activate the Norton product if the Symantec Core LC is disabled. You won't find this service in the 2009/2010 products.

Thank you yogesh and Tim, so I really need not worry about this as it effects protection, because it doesn't.

Is this how I sometimes get the "hey you can upgrade your product", or " hey your subscription will run out soon" message?

There is no extra expense involved when you upgrade to the 2010 line - all you need is to have your existing valid key and to enter it after installation - the protecton updates are what you pay for essentially, not the software itself.

Calls is having NAV 2008 currently, and would like to upgrade to NIS 2010 which has firewall. Free upgrade to NAV 2010 is possible, but Calls want firewall protection along with it.
