I noticed today that IE7 is instantly crashing/closing when I tried to load a particular site. I'm running XP Pro, fully updated, have rebooted, and have run Live Update on NIS2010. It didn't happen in IE7's No-Addins mode, so I started disabling plugins to see what was the cause.
Turns out it's the Symantec Intrusion Prevention plugin... disable that and the sites load without crashing. I appear to be able to leave the other Symantec plugin enabled as well.
The sites (actually specific pages on certain sites) I've noticed so far are:
Any ideas? It crashes IE7 without an error message, so I don't know what other information I can include.
Edit: I got it to throw an error, but the contents weren't that useful (couldn't be cut and paste and were a massive long list of loaded files). With this error, the event viewer did log the following:
Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 7.0.6000.17091, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x05959df2.

I'm not a fan of IE8's font rendering and am trying to avoid it until I have no choice (ie. I go to W7). And at that point I'll probably end up using Firefox or Chrome.
I upgraded to NIS2011, and the problem remains. However, I noticed that when I installed it, it did *not* re-enable that plugin, despite the fact that it re-enabled a couple other things that I had disabled... and there are also no warnings or anything about that item. Disabling/re-enabling various features doesn't seem to affect the status of those plugins.
I am having a similar problem as of this morning. I can load certain pages, but if I click on a link to go to another page within that domain (i.e eBay.com, mail.yahoo.com), it shuts down immediately with any error messages.
I am running Windows XP with IE7 and NAV 2011 (which has been installed for a few weeks). I have enough headaches with IE8 on my other computer which runs Win 7 so am not going to upgrade to IE8. I've been through all my add-ons and only the Symantec Intrusion Prevention addon IPSBHO.DLL is the culprit.
No, the 'solution' isn't "oh, just run a different browser" or "run a different version of Norton".
(Or change browsers again, and again.)
IE8 is awful.
We don't mind if *YOU* like IE8, but we just hated its new (very odd) "features".
(Besides, the company has NO intention of upgrading 80 machines, just due to a Norton bug. Company policy is to drop the *CAUSE* of the problem: Norton.)
We've applied *EVERY* Windows patch as of today. The problem continues.
We also will NEVER use Norton 2011. (Besides, it also has the same problem, and more.)
Norton just has far too many problems. Always. And now it's even crashing our entire browser, right from start-up.
I'm an I.T. pro, and I've had three calls from users at three different locations, all with the same problem. Two of them are using Comcast's Norton Security Suite, and one is using Norton Internet Security 2011. Disabling the Symantec Intrusion Prevention plugin fixes the problem.
Hopefully Norton can get an update out soon that will take care of this, or provide a real fix (IE8 is not yet an option for many of my clients).
Update: Four more computers at two different locations with this issue.
We're investigating the cause of this issue and are working towards providing a solution to those who are affected.
I will provide more information on this as soon as I have it.
Keep an eye on this thread for updates from Symantec regarding this issue. You can subscribe to this thread to receive email updates when replies are posted. For more information on that, see THIS POST.
Sorry for the troubles this has caused you. Please know we're working hard to find a solution and correct this as quick as possible.
This morning I tried to use IE7 (on Win XP SP3 fully patched PC) to get to Google Advanced Search page, crashed out every time. Also crashes out when trying to get to Outlook Web Access for work. Also crashes on going to an online bank site. Works fine on many other sites.
This was on a PC with NIS2011, and same behaviour happened on a 2nd laptop (same Win config) with NIS2010.
Went to a third laptop, same config EXCEPT it had AVG, not NIS - no problem visiting same sites.
Is it possible that there is a problem with an update released in the last 24 hours? Thanks
To add to the record, I am having the same problem with various sites. The URL that accesses my Motorola Cable modem's settings/status, and for example www.jcpenny.com/jcp/default.aspx . If you then select a dropdown, say Womens, then say Sweaters - the site will simply close IE 7 or create an IE error block then close.
Utilizing XP Pro-SP3, IE 7, NIS 2010 - all programs up to date.
All is well if I disable the IPSBHO.DLL Browser Helper Object.
Noted today that NIS has so far downloaded the following IP updates with no resolution:
I have the same issue. IE7, XP SP3, the browser window just closes with no error. I can't believe Norton provided this failed update and hasn't fixed the problem yet (don't they test?). I spent HOURS deinstalling SP3 (so I could deinstall IE7), re-installing SP3, re-installing IE7, disabling add-ons, deleting activeX controls, etc.
I did a seach in google once I realized the problem was with Symantec plug-ins, and found this thread.
I'm leaving it disabled for now.
And "NO" I don't want to upgrade to IE8 (that's a sucky solution). I can run Google Chrome without a problem.
Although this is a major pain (huge number of sites seem to be affected) I have to say that I'm impressed with Symantec's responsiveness in this forum (well, actually the Admin staff).
So many of these forum affairs are ignored by the corporate powers-that-be, and are really just 'DIY' areas for the users to thrash around in, with nobody from the software firm taking a blind bit of notice.
Glad that the solution appears to be here already, fast work for a software company - they all make mistakes, and I personally can forgive them as long as they own up and fix it quickly. so many don't.....
We have pushed out a new IPS Definition Set update through LiveUpdate. Please run LiveUpdate from within your Norton product to download the new updates.
If you have Automatic LiveUpdate enabled (which is typically enabled by default), this may have already downloaded in the background.
If you continue to receive this error, please restart your computer.
