I ran into the exact same problem with Norton 360 yesterday. Suddenly I was unable to keep IE7 open for more than a couple of seconds. There were no error messages; it just closed.
This did not happen when running IE without add-ins. By disabling each one seperately I found that Symantec Intrusion Prevention was the culprit.
I am running WinXP Pro fully updated. I have been using Norton for nearly a year and have not had any similar problems until now. Disabling the Symantec plug-in restores normal IE operation, but I'm afraid leaves my system more vulnerable.
I want to thank everyone who posted information on the thread about the problem. The information on the forum was valuable in replicating and resolving the problem.
I've been having the problem with IE crashing for a while and came across your post today by pure chance, while researching an entirely different problem.
Is there another way to get the new DLL?
My subscription for NAV has expired and I can't renew it before the end of the year. When I run Live Update it just says "No updates available" and I am sure that's because my subscription has expired over a year ago. I know my virus definitions are out of date by at least a year as well, no matter what Live Update says. Perhaps saying "No updates available" just means there are no updates for me because my subscription expired so long ago. That's find and I accept that of course.
I just want the new DLL to keep the Intrusion Prevention included in NAV from crashing IE when I access certain sites. So how can I get the new Intrusion Prevention DLL before I renew my subscription to NAV ?
Is there any chance that the fix will cause IE8 - Windows Vista - to keep running after closing? If I open IE, browse a few sites and close, two iexplore.exe are running in the task manager. If I open IE8 again, two more and so on. If I disable the Symantec Intrusion Prevention from the Add-on Manager, iexplore.exe closes normally. Any suggestions?
I am using IE8 with Windows 7. I'm using Norton Internet Security 2011. Try upgrading to the LATEST version by visiting http://www.norton.com/nuc and see if it fixes things. Also, you should have been using ie8 for the following reasons:
Better complient with the internet standards (IE8 passes acid 2 test while IE7 and older doesn't)
IE8 includes many features not available in ie7 and older
IE8 fixes many of the holes included in ie7
IE8 makes it easier to disable plugins
There are too many reasons to list here/I don't know about.
Thanks! Don't know if that's an option considering it's the FREE Comcast Version:

Like I said, It's been working perfectly up until today, at least that's when I noticed that the browser would freeze and also noticed the multiple instances of iexplore.exe running in task manager. Went through the Manage Add-Ons routine and discovered that disabling Symantec Intrusion Prevention resolved the problem. Searching as to WHY disabling it resolves the issue brought me here.
Thanks! At least I now know that I wasn't imagining the browser freezing or SIP being the Add-On responsiple. Uninstalling / Upgrading to the latest version on Comcast (Version: 4.3.0.5) seemed to fix the SIP enabling issue. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
