Tomorrow is Monday and the weekend will be over. I’m not knocking those here trying to help you but hopefully Tony and the other Norton staffers will catch up and may even know a solution.
Zana,
I just read your post, and can't say I'm surprised. I have now talked with support 10 times now, and everybody is just reading the same old stuff, like off a card. Every single time they take the same steps, go through, remote access, and say everything is fine. Then, nothing has changed at all. Also, and I am not being anything rude or something, so please don't anyone look into it, but a few of the people I have spoke with today have very thick accents, and somewhat broken English, which makes it hard for me to understand them, and sometimes likewise them with me.
Huwygr,
I would hope that would be the case, but I have my doubts.
Especially since the newest wrinkle this evening...I received yet another Tech Support email about uninstalling and reinstalling, and I did and then the worst thing happened.
I LOST MY INTERNET ACCESS!! COMPLETELY! I COULDN'T EVEN ACCESS MY PLAYSTATION 3 ONLINE!
Why, because of a screw up with Norton! It said it was uninstalled, yet the icons were still on my desk top! Then I went to control panel to try and uninstall, and when I clicked on Norton 360, it said the path was not valid. But I couldn't access my internet access. I spent 2 hours online with Road Runner, then one hour with HP, nothing. My modem was working, my router was working, but I couldn't get online. Then, I went to play some games, and I couldn't even get online. I scheduled an appointment for a service call thinking something was wrong with my computer itself, and then I ran the Norton Removal Tool again.
Suddenly, I had internet access again. I have no idea what happened. But now I'm afraid to even try to Reinstall Norton again. How could the program take away my internet access, not just for the computer, but everything on my network. I am so frustrated, I don't know what to do. Now, I really don't have antivirus protection.
This is a ridiculous situation, and if there is no solution, I know I can get a refund. But do you know how that works, it can take up to 6 WEEKS to get a refund through Norton. In the meantime, I am out $60, I would have to go buy another Antivirus, and there is no guarantee of a refund, Norton has to approve it. So, I paid $60 for software that won't work, then I have to go pay for another antivirus. This situation is just ridiculous, and not right. I am at my wits' end again.
Hi figerguy,
My experiences when using N360 v2 are the following:
1. A month ago I tried to install NIS 2008. This ended in a error message and a freeze of the system
in the same Windows folder everytime I conducted a “Full AV scan”.
2. I had the same kind of frustration as you have discribed.
3. Next step was to install an other software instead of NIS. This was N360 v2.
4. Result: The system worked as intended with N 360 v2 installed.
5. I was of cause a little bit ??!!, very !!, puzzled of this result !!
6. I had a short time-out from “this kind of computing” !!!
7. Restart and go on to the next step !!
8. Uninstalling N 360 v2 and reinstalling NIS 2008.
9. Guess what happened ??!!
10. My system has been working better then ever before. The troublesolver = N360 v2 !!
11. I am again very, very puzzled to read your experience !!
12. My way of troubleshooting says, there are things not working properly in your system, besides N 360 v2.
13. Namely: A standard installation, or a standard reinstallation of N360 v2, has always ended up in a working system for me.
14. Thats why we have to wait for pro support people to give us more and better info !!
Your are not alone !!
Symantec Support has always given me high quality service.
Could be that I understand their job better, when having done service my self !!
Sometimes service is more complicated and often more time is needed to solve the issue, than we think.
I will wait and give my next comment, when Symantec Support has done its job !!
Hope you do the same !?!?
Kurt
Hi figureguy,
I read in your post "05-18-2008 07:47 AM", that you had Norton Antivirus being uninstalled by N 360 v2.
Have you tried reinstall this Norton Antivirus?
If the answer is "NO", please try and see how Norton Antivirus will work now after the event you have had
lately when trying to use N 360 v2.
Your knowledge how your system worked with Norton Antivirus, can show if any changes are present
on your system besides N 360 v2.
Please cooperate to find a solution for YOUR SYSTEM.
Kurt
I have Norton 360 v2 running and have tried the Symantec security check which says I don't have an Anti Virus program running. So I installed Webroot Spysweeper (antivirus and spyware) and tried the security check again,it still said I had no anti virus running.
If there a fault with the security checker because the site also says "Some checks did not complete" due to an error on the server, the checks are Hacker Exposure check,Windows Vulnerability Check,Trojan Horse Check.
My computer (Vista) does recognise that Norton 360 is running
Rob,
I had the same thing happen with the Security Check. However, on my HP, I also have a startup program that monitors my system called HP Advisor. It also checks the status of the security on my system. When 360 was running fine, HP Advisor recognized it and showed the status as good. As soon as I got the Security Framework error message, my HP started not recognizing the software and telling me it wasn't working right. The Security Check is one thing, but when two different programs can't recognize that my software is working then I tend to think something isn't right.
Kurt,
I am not sure what to do about the NIS, actually it was, that I had installed previously. I'm not sure how, since I don't have the disk anymore. I did, but then last year I just purchased an additional year's service from Norton directly, and figured since it has also updated my version that the disk was not needed. Plus, the whole reason I bought the 360 was because my NIS was expiring and I wanted to upgrade my protection.
Vista recognises that Norton 360 V2 is working showing that firewall, malware & virus are okay.
Hi figureguy,
Use the following url for Norton trialware
http://shop.symantecstore.com/store/symnahho/en_US/ContentTheme/ThemeID.106300/pbPage.Trialware_en_US
and download NAV 2008 and install to see what will happend.
Please report what you have found.
Without you reply it will be more difficult to find a solution for you.
I hope you want to make it easier for us to help you.
Show good will, please !!
Kurt
Hi Figureguy
I know exactly what you mean about Symantac Support
Contacting Symantec support is a complete waste of time!
I never bothered with Symantec Support with my problem with Norton 360 v 2
Why?
Because in the past with my old XP and Norton 360 v 1 .... I've Been There - Done That - And Got The T-Shirt!
My Old XP wasn't actually - Old!
It was my first computer that I had bought for me and my little boy.
10 years it took me to save for that computer.
And thanks to problems with Norton 360 v 1 .... It was declared dead by PC World after just 12 months
That's why I said to you... Give Up!
I must have tried over 20 times to get Norton 360 v 1 to install on my old XP
In the end.... The computer was in such a muddle - PC World - Wrote it OFF!
Thank god it was insured!
But it still took a bit of help from a very kind uncle... To replace my Old XP - With my New Vista.
My new Vista computer came with a Trial of Norton Internet Security 2007
The Trial worked perfectly for 3 weeks!
Then all of a sudden ... I couldn't update my Virus Definitions
Because It was only a trial - I Uninstalled it!
I replaced it with Norton 360 v 1
NOTE : Only because PC World had given me a new ... Norton 360 v 1 + Office 2007 for £50
And only because I like the Norton Firewall - No Pop Ups!
Otherwise... I probably would have gone straight for a different security package.
Surprisingly.... Norton 360 v 1 seemed really happy on my new Vista computer
It coped with the update to SP1 really well
And apart from the fact - It forced me to Back Up every 2 weeks ... Even though I had set Back Up to Manual.
I was Happy!
Then I found out I could update to Norton 360 v 2
Oh! How I wish I had never bothered
It was the - Right Click & Scan - That I wanted back!
That's why I updated to Norton 360 v 2
But as you already know.....
Symantec Service Framework Stopped Working.
4 Installes and Uninstalls later....
I could see history starting to repeat itself
I'm sure from reading my links - You already know...
Norton 360 v 2 caused problems with my Card Reader.
My Intel Viiv Software & Media Centre.
And just a complete general decline of my computers health.
I couldn't risk loosing another computer
Note!
I really do think Norton 360 v 2 could be the perfect security package.
But Symantec need to pull their heads out of the sand - Put their hands up - And admit... Norton 360 v 2 has problems!
And Stop Rushing Software Out Before Its Ready!
Zana
Kurt,
I did as you asked. Now, Symantec's own security checker won't recognize that I have virus software installed. However, now my computer's HP Advisor says I do, and with Windows firewall turned on, it says my computer is now secure. I always heard bad things about using Windows Firewall, but it will do for today. I'm going to leave it running for a bit and see if I get the Symantec Framework error message again.
Zana,
I understand completely what you are saying. On my older XP, I had Internet Security running for a couple of years problem free. Nothing, nada, no hiccups or whatever. Oh, I won't risk my computer over this. If I can't get this working as it should, I want a refund clear and simple. Then, I will choose another virus protection software and be done with it. I just can't afford to buy another one now with the $60 I have tied up in 360.
Hi figureguy,
Very good !!
You do know that there is already a firewall in NAV 2008 ?
Two firewalls can cause a conflict !!
Please let it run so you get a picture of a functioning system again.
"The Symantec Framework error message" you can get during a short
stabilization period of 1-2 days, depending on your system´s configuration.
Kurt
Hi Figureguy
And the other problem of giving up on Norton 360 v 2 ... What do we replace it with?
All I knew when I had to find some new security ... Was what Not to replace it with!
All these Internet Security Companies are as bad as each other!
When I first got my old XP ... I used Norton Internet security 2006 for the first year - No Problems!
Then when my subscription ran out and I tried to install Norton 360 v 1 ....
Every morning after new install - Error message was : 16 Things wrong! - Please Uninstall!
Also... Live Update would never work
So I decided to give up and try something else!
1/ Trial - Mcafee Internet Security
Pros! - Installed and Uninstalled just fine. ( You even get a link in your account - So you can easily reinstall )
Nice little touches like.... You could see when you were getting an update.
Cons! - Scans - Very Slow
Computer slowed to a crawl
The Firewall was really difficult to understand.
The Firewall tried to block absolutely everything.
But the worst thing...
It just let a Trojan walk straight in.
2/ Trial - Windows Live Onecare
Pros! - NONE
Cons! - When I uninstalled it... It took my DVD player with it!
3/ Trial - Kaspersky Internet Security
Pros! - NONE
Cons! - It wouldn't Install or Uninstall.
I was left in a right mess!
With No Removal Tool ... And System Restore didn't get rid of it either.
My old XP got sent back to Factory Settings so many times in the last month of it's life... No wonder it gave up!
And - Yes!
Even after sending my XP back to Factory settings.... Norton 360 v 1 still wouldn't work!
At the moment on my New Vista....
AVG 8 Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware
Pros! - Link Scanner
That's about it!
Cons!
Really bashes the CPU about when it scans
A lot of people have had problems with AVG 8 too!
PC Tools Firewall Plus
Pros! - Nice little Firewall
Free
Nice little animated icon in the Taskbar - Showing Incoming & Outgoing Internet Traffic
Cons! - Still harder to use than the Norton Firewall
Zana
Kurt,
I did not know for sure. So I turned off Windows Firewall, and then rebooted. Now, Norton says it is secure, and now my HP Advisor says there is no firewall running.
Hi Zana,
I know, how do you know what to use? I too have looked into AVG, I saw the free one, but the better version seems to be the paid for one. I used McAfee once before, a long time ago, wasn't that happy with it. That's what turned me onto Norton in the first place.
If you connect to the internet through a router you have a hardware firewall which is good; and N360 has a software firewall bult in.
Hi Figureguy
Yep!
Choosing what security to replace something like Norton 360 v 2 with ... Is an extremely hard Decision!
Re : AVG
The AVG 8 that I am using at the moment ... Is a 30 Day Trial of the paid for version of AVG 8 Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware.
Note : The AVG 8 That I have - Does Not include a Firewall.
However... There is a version of AVG 8 with a Firewall included.
I didn't realise when when I installed AVG 8 that people were reporting problems with it.
It was only when I visited my favourite forums - That I realised....
The once much respected AVG had got people completely turning away from it practically over night.
The way I see the AVG situation is like this...
A lot of the people complaining have always used the Free version of AVG
AVG 7.5 Free - Used to be just an Anti-Virus
So the people that were using it also had other Anti-Spyware software installed.
e.g.. Spybot Search & Destroy
And other Firewall Software installed.
e.g.. Zonealarm
AVG has had a huge following for years.
And the things people liked about it was that its was.....
1/ Free for those that chose to just have the free version
2/ Very good virus detection rates
3/ Very light on the computer ( No Slow Downs & Low CPU Usage )
4/ People liked the fact that they could mix and match it with other Free Anti-Spyware and Free Firewall Software.
Then came AVG 8 with it's Anti-Spyware included
So people are slowly updating from AVG 7.5 to AVG 8 ...
But because they have other Antispyware software installed on their computers - They are running into big Problems!
The new AVG 8 is also a lot heavier on the CPU
And the new Link Scanner seems to fight with a lot of peoples favourite Browser - FireFox
And that's why suddenly people are turning their nose up at AVG 8
I can't say I turn on my computer every day and think - " Oh! AVG 8 - You're Great "
I think AVG 8 is actually very expensive for what you get.
Hard to understand!
And comes with a very ugly Yahoo Toolbar
Then again...
I've always thought AVG was ugly, hard to understand, and more for computer enthusiasts.
That said...
I haven't had any serious problems with AVG 8
Only...
1/ It bashes my CPU about when it scans
2/ I think the Active Surf Shield is blocking one of my little boys online games.
But .... At least AVG 8 works!
My computer is safe.
And I can finally sleep at night.
I really like the Link Scanner
When you do a Google Search ... It scans all the websites and tells you if they are safe to click on.
I think I will probably keep AVG 8 after the trial ends.
But I can't see me using it forever!
Maybe when Symantec get there act together I'll go back to Norton.
Hi Fgureguy
Me Again!
I forgot to explain about my new Firewall
The reason I didn't go for the AVG 8 with Firewall included...
The day I installed AVG 8
I'd just so happened to read a magazine review ... Saying that the AVG 8 Firewall was hard to configure
I know very little about Firewalls and Firewall Rules
So reading the magazine review really put me off having the AVG 8 Firewall.
I just happened to remember a man on another forum talking about - PC Tools Firewall Plus
He had said it was an easy Firewall to use compared to most of them.
So That's what made up my mind...
AVG 8 for my Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware
PC Tools Firewall Plus for my Firewall.
Considering it's Free ... PC Tools Firewall Plus has turned out to be a little Gem really
It's still a lot harder to use than the Norton Firewall.
But after my experience with the Mcafee Firewall ...
I do recon PC Tools Firewall Plus is one of the easier Firewalls to use.
Inbound & Outbound Protection!
And as I said before...
You get a little animated Taskbar icon - That shows you the flow of Internet Traffic in and out of your computer.
On installation you are asked do you want to install PC Tools Free Threatfire as well.
I said - No
I'm so glad I did say - No!
As I have since found out Threatfire can Clash with AVG 8
Since Installing PC Tools Firewall Plus - I have found out, via my rounds of the forums...
This little Firewall is gaining quite a good reputation and following
