System Restore Vulnerabilty

This isn’t specifically a Norton-related question, but it came up after a sequence of events that occurred after NIS 2009 detected and prevented an attempted infection by something called “HTTP Acrobat Suspicious Executable File Download.”  (It was NOT while I was attempting to use Acrobat, BTW – I was web-surfing.)

I looked at Symantec’s online info on this malware, and the first thing suggested was to disable System Restore (Win XP Home).  Even though the attack had been prevented, I did disable System Restore  just to be on the safe side, and then restarted it after doing a full scan (as well as running Malwarebytes).

When I restarted it and created a restore point, I noticed that the System Volume Information (System Restore) folder claimed a size of 0 bytes.  I seemed to recall this was always the case, and wondered how I could find the actual folder size.

This led me to a tweak that unprotects the System Volume Information folder so that the contents can be examined similarly to any folder, including of course the actual size.

My question here is whether unprotecting this folder creates any additional vulnerability to malware.  (I am the only person who uses the pc, and there is no file sharing of any kind .)

Any opinions?  Thanks.
