System Restore

Just reinstalled my NIS 2011 after having it out for awhile. Do you still have to have Tamper Protection turned off for system restore to work. I remember it didn't work if it was on before when I was using NIS 2010.

Yes, Norton Product Tamper Protection needs to be disabled prior to a restore operation.   Additionally, using System Restore is likely to break Norton, requiring that you reinstall the program after restoring.

What if you just left it off would it work both ways then? Making a restore point and then restoring a restore point.

I don't think that will help.  System restore replaces some, but not all, files with older versions.  This messes up Norton to the point of requiring that the whole program be reinstalled in most cases.

Then I guess you would have to rely on an image program.

System Restore is useful for some situations, and having to reinstall Norton is not all that difficult or time consuming.  However, System Restore does have many limitations and can create problems as well as solve them.  I think far too many people use System Restore in situations that actually call for restoring from a disk image backup.  Depending on what you are trying to fix, an image backup is generally a more reliable way to get the entire system back to a point that predates whatever issue you are having.   System Restore tends to be more hit and miss.

I agree Thank You for your help

Hi PC_confused,

I've had to run System Restore on a family member's computer two or three times, and the only thing that happened was that Norton complained about outdated definitions. Running LiveUpdate fixed this. What you have to do before doing a system restore is the following: deactivate Norton Product Tamper Protection (not AutoProtect), otherwise System Restore will fail. Here is more information on how to deactivate Tamper Protection:

Don't forget to turn on Tamper Protection after restoring your system :-)

Yaso Kuuhl, thanks for the correction.  I hope I don't need it but I wanted to be prepared.

I think the more recent the restore point, the smaller the risk that Norton will be crippled after the system restore :-) Still, it won't hurt to back up the NIS 2011 installation file to an external drive in case you have to reinstall NIS 2011.

I do not mean to put this thread off topic, but a quick question if I may.

In addtion to the file Yaso mentioned, should they not also Export their Identity Safe data so it is available to Import if they have to reinstall?

yank, yes, excellent reminder - thanks :-D

Hello

Actually that Identity Safe file should be backed up routinely especially after any changes made to it if it is used.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  So far the new video card is up and running with no problems.  At least that I can see..  I do have to find out why Firefox will not let me sign into my Community Account.  It asks for the username and password, which I supply and then the screen blinks and I am again asked for my username and password.  It doesn't say anything is wrong, just blanks out.  Works fine in IE7?  I'll keep looking..  Oops...:smileysad:  looks like I had block all cookies selected in Firefox.  Allowed Cookies and now I can log in..  Live and learn (Sometimes)..
