(1) Excluding "Documents and Settings" from the search for backing up files
How do I setup Norton 360 so that it will not search "Documents and Settings" folder for files to backup?
It seems to take a lot of time and CPU in searching for files to back-up even if those files are not in the backup list.
(2) N360 taking lot of CPU and time
I installed Norton 360 2.0 when I installed a new hard disk for my laptop and resinstalled the OS and everything about a month ago. N360 was working fine, not eating CPU like the previous version of Norton 360 did for me. However.. I ran into problems after I tried to do something with back-up settings. In summary, I deleted almost all previously backed up files from Norton Online Storage and unselected almost all files from the list of files to be backed up. While in the middle of doing this, N360 started taking lot of CPU (80-90%. All of that is by CCSVCHST.EXE - two instances of this process runs and each takes about 40-50% of CPU) and it would take about 15 minutes or more before freeing up the CPU everytime I click on something in the backup settings screens. Once instance of CCSVCHST.EXE would take about 50% CPU for about 15-30 minutes at the time of booting the computer. I have now disabled backup, still the problem with CCSVCHST.EXE taking 50% CPU continues at the time of booting the computer. (I could not check if it takes more CPU and time from backup settings since I have disabled backup).
Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong, or ideas to resolve this problem?
Norton 360 2.0 is what I have, and the Operating system is Windows XP professional SP3.
Least to tell, it is driving me crazy. I spent lot of time thinking if I should get Norton 360 again when my last subscription was due for renewal, and in doing a hard drive upgrade and installing Windows and all software again on my laptop. I was happy with the results until N360 started eating up my CPU :-) N360 V2 was working like a breeze (occasionaly Live Update modules take lot of CPU, but that would go away quickly), reduced the number of start-up processes.
1. How do I setup Norton 360 so that it will not search “Documents and Settings” folder for files to backup?
To the best of my knowledge, I don’t think that is possible. However, if time consumption is your only concern, then exclude the smart categories that you think is taking more time.
Also, check what type of back up have you set in the back up settings window. Check if it just points to quick back up or full back up. Sometimes, if you have it set to full back up, this may take more time as it will check for the smart categories in your entire computer.
2. N360 taking lot of CPU and time
I’m not sure about the RAM that you have. Anyways, we released a product update a while ago to address some performance issues with ccSvcHST.exe. Kindly check the version of the product that you are running. If it doesn’t point to Norton 360 2.5, then in all probabilities you don’t have the latest product. In that case, run LiveUpdate and then reboot if prompted and check if it is revved to the version number mentioned here.
If you have the latest version and still experience the performance issue, I would recommend that you contact the technical support through the One Click Support feature.
1. click Help and Support
2. Click One Click Support.
Follow the on-screen instructions to get connected to a support agent.
If your issue still persists, please feel free to wirte back to us in the forum. We will be more than happy to help you.
1) That is pretty disappointing, especially when I think that that folder (Documents and Settings) is what is causing the problem. (look below to see why I say that this is the problem)
Time consumption is not a big concern, but CCSVCHST.EXE uses up over 50% of CPU and that is the problem.
If I exclude any of the smart categories, files of that category from other folders are also exlcuded. e.g., if I exclude 'Pictures' category, JPG files from folders outside of 'Documents and Settings' are excluded from back-up.
Type of backup is "quick backup".
Why is it designed to check entire computer even when the backup destination is set to online storage ..? I dont think anyone would want to backup the entire computer whereas available storage is only 2GB.
2)
I have 2GB RAM on my laptop.
Norton 260 version is 2.5.0.5.
Well, I figured something and problem is temporarily resolved. I found over 5000 files under a folder in "My Documents" that belong to another user of the computer. I deleted all those files from the computer and after that the time taken by CCSVCHST.EXE to free up CPU has reduced drastically. Now it only takes few minutes on certain occasions which is okay.
"My Documents" is the only folder for users to keep their files privately when the computer is used by more than one user (in the same household). So.. I badly need to exclude 'documents and settings' folder from the back-up setting. It did not seem to be a problem in previous version of Norton 360.
We are aware that many customers would like to have an option to exclude the “Documents and Settings” folder from being scanned for backup. We have come up with an option to exclude “My Documents” in our soon-to-be released Norton 360 v3.
Norton 360 V3 is currently in the public beta phase and you are most welcome to participate in the beta program if you would like to.
