Technician says it's a virus. I am unconvinced

Hello all,

I got home to a completely crashed computer today.  It was caught in an eternal reboot so I brought it in to a technician who says that the hard disk has been completely reformatted.  Everything is gone.  I asked if he meant a hard disk failure but no - he says that it was likely a virus that reformatted my disk.  Um.  I am skeptical to say the least.

I have (or rather, HAD) Norton Internet Security installed and up to date.  It was completely operational at all times.  I don't accept email on that PC...ever...and didn't even have Outlook or any other email utility installed.  I do download TV shows from time to time.  I am not sure what to do with this guys "diagnoses"...I am no security expert but I am not buying the virus story.

Does anyone here have any input to offer???

Thanks!!
