This is a huge thank you to everyone on these forums... from the folks who ask questions to the people who respond with their experience and/or expertise!
I'm a huge fun of NIS, but was traumatized by trying to uninstall the 2001 and 2003 versions, even with the help of 3 Symantec techs. Last year I hired a local "expert" to uninstall 2006 and install 2008 (which ran, but seemed to goof up my system in mysterious ways). Last month, thanks to the economy but bouyed by all the helpful advice here, I decided to try it again by myself when my subscription ran out.
I still had to call Symantec to verify an issue (caused by my overthinking the process), but if I hadn't read so much here so carefully, I woudn't have known to suspect the nice fellow's first answer and call back to verify with another tech. The second fellow even seemed to enjoy my standard test question: "If you gave your Mother-in-law this advice, would you still expect to get invited back to dinner?" As hoped, it prompted him to give a very understandable, but thorough, explanation for his advice.
In the end, I successfully uninstalled 2008 (and remnants of 2006!) and installed 2009. WOW! What a difference! My computer is running like new. My trauma is over, my faith is largely restored in Symantec's tech support, and my appreciation for all who have so generously devote your time and energy to this forum is overflowing.
It's great to see that you got everything sorted out in the end.
N.I.S. 2010 is even lighter on your system, with advanced protection; if you wish to Upgrade, please have a look at this Thread by Tim_Lopez, where he points out: User's who have an active subscription to Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus 2006 and newer can update to the 2010 for FREE by visiting the Norton Update Center. Here is the Thread: Norton Internet Security 2010 and Norton AntiVirus 2010 have been Released!.
You know where we are, should you require assistance or advice.
We are always glad to here from another satisfied symantec/norton customer. NIS 2009 is a phenominal improvement over the first versions of it and even over NIS 2008.
LOL... thanks for the referral to NIS 2010! I love the ability to upgrade in the midst of a subscription, but prefer to wait until at least 6 months after a new version comes out. Meanwhile, I'll look forward to your posts about it here.
Good advice kats. Even though it appears there are no major problems with NIS 2010 there are some minor problems and aesthetic issues being reported. It is always a good idea to wait until the bugs are worked out.
