The Identity Safe Portal is here!

If you’ve been keeping up with Norton products, you probably already know that Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2012 included new capabilities that gave you the option to store your Identity Safe Vault (passwords, credit card numbers, and other data) in the Norton cloud and share it between all your computers with Norton Internet Security 2012. Up until now, however, your Vault could only be accessed from a computer with Norton Internet Security 2012 installed.

Today we’re launching identitysafe.norton.com, a web portal which allows you to access your Identity Safe Vault from any web browser—useful, for example, when you’re at work, a café, or a friend’s house and can’t remember a password. With the portal, you can view your logins, cards, and notes in the browser just like you could from within Norton Internet Security.  In this post, I’ll walk you through how to get started with using the Identity Safe web portal.

Creating an Online Vault

If you already have an online Vault, you’re all set to get started! Go ahead and skip down to the “Getting Started” section. Don’t worry if you don’t have an online Vault yet—we’ll walk through the whole setup process.

The Identity Safe web portal is read-only, which means you can view your Vault but not create or modify it via the website. You’ll need a copy of Norton Internet Security 2012 to create your online vault. If you have an older version of NIS and a valid subscription, you can upgrade to NIS 2012 for free by navigating to Support | Check for New Version in the product’s main window. Otherwise, you can get a free trial copy at: http://us.norton.com/downloads/trialsoftware.

To create an online vault in Norton Internet Security 2012:

  1. In the Norton Internet Security main window, click Settings:

    1.png

  2. In the Settings window, click the Web tab:

    2.png

  3. In the left pane, click Identity Safe:

    3.png

  4. Under Identity Safe, in the Identity Safe Setup row, click Configure:

    4.png

  5. At the bottom of the Set Up Identity Safe window, click the “Login to Norton Account” link:

    5.png

  6. If you don’t have a Norton Account, click “Create New Account” and follow the instructions. Otherwise, login to your account.

  7. We now need to set a Vault password, which is different from your Norton Account password. The Vault password will secure your Vault so that no one other than you can access your data. If you forget this password, not even we can unlock your Vault for you! In the Create Password box, type in your desired Vault password. The password strength must be “Strong”. Click the “How to create a strong password?” link to learn more about creating strong passwords.

  8. In the Confirm Password box, type your vault password again.

  9. In the Password Hint box, type in a hint for the password. Make sure that the hint doesn’t reveal anything about your password to anyone but you.

  10. Check Store information online through your Norton Account (this option appears only if you have logged in to your Norton Account). This is important! If you don’t check this, your data will not be synced to the Norton cloud and will not be accessible via the portal.

  11. Click Create:

    11.png

  12. In the Identity Safe Setup Successful window, click Done:

    12.png

  13. You can now use the “Edit Cards”, “Edit Logins”, and “Edit Notes” links to add your data to your Vault. Norton Internet Security will automatically sync your data to the Norton cloud!

  • For those of you with a large number of Vault items, we tried to make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for. In the upper left corner of the page, there are controls for:
    • Switching between thumbnail and list views
    • Filtering Logins by folder or website category
    • Searching for items by name or title

Viewing Your Data

  • Clicking on an item will pop up a dialog with the item’s info.

  • To protect your private information from prying eyes, we hide your passwords and credit card numbers when your item dialogs are opened. Clicking on the “Show Password” or “Show Details” links will reveal your password or credit card numbers images.

If you’d like to copy your password or card number to clipboard, click on the clipboard icon next to the image, and then click the copy to clipboard link in the popup. Just remember to clear your clipboard when you’re done. For your convenience we also provide a link for clearing the clipboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the purpose of the Norton Identity Safe Web Portal?
The Norton Identity Safe Web Portal allows you to conveniently access your Identity Safe online vault from any web browser capable device,                not just those with Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security installed.                For example, if you're using a computer at an Internet café or hotel business center,                you can still have access to your website logins, credit card details and secure notes.
Who can access the Norton Identity Safe Web Portal?
Norton Identity Safe Web Portal can be accessed by anyone who has:
  1. Installed Norton Internet Security 2012 on at least one computer.
  2. Created a Norton Account.
  3. Entered their Norton Account credentials in Norton Internet Security 2012.
  4. Created an Identity Safe online vault.
Which web browsers support Norton Identity Safe Web Portal?
Norton Identity Safe Web Portal is supported across the latest versions of Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer.
Why do I need two passwords to login to my vault?
Rather than simply relying on your Norton Account credentials to provide access to all your private data,                we felt that it was prudent to enforce a separate strong password for online vaults to minimize the chance that your data could ever be breached by would-be thieves.
How do I change my online vault password?
Change your vault password using the Norton Internet Security 2012 Identity Safe settings as follows:
  1. On the Norton Internet Security main window, click Settings.
  2. At the top of the Settings window, click Web, then click Identity Safe on the left side.
  3. If you are not logged into Identity Safe, click Configure [+] next to "Log in to Identity Safe" to log in now.
  4. Click Configure [+] next to "Password & Security."
  5. In the Password & Security dialog, click Change Password and proceed with changing your password.
Can I modify my online vault data from the Norton Identity Safe Web Portal?

Grabbed that from the posted link

HI Andrew,

GREAT feature here. I just had a chance to check this out in working the issue on the following thread.

http://community.norton.com/t5/Area-51/Bug-in-Online-ID-safe/m-p/577478/highlight/false

I LOVE it! :smileyvery-happy:

Thanks for the information.

Best wishes.

Allen

Hi Andrew,

A couple of comments and one suggestion.

When you click the Show Password link in the portal, the password is a bit difficult to read and has a strikethrough which makes it even more difficult to read. Can this be made more legible?

Also, it would be highly beneficial if you could copy/paste this password instead of having to type it in by hand. Part of the intent of having this portal as indicated in the BLOG is so that if you are somewhere without Norton installed then you can log into the ID safe portal and retrieve your login information.

This would be much more user friendly if you could copy/paste the password.

Should I suggest this in the Product Suggestions board or can you (hopefully) run with it based on the feedback here?? I think this is such an obvious improvement that hopefully you can run with it without more widespread user feedback.

Thanks again, it really is a great value add! :smileyhappy:

Best wishes.

Allen

The password is being rendered as a graphic by the server.

This is being done as a security precaution in case there is malware on your system that can easily access the page HTML and read your password, the graphic is further obfuscated to make machine recognition more difficult.

This feature was hotly debated, and we welcome your feedback and suggestions on improving usability and securtiy.

There is also a link to copy the password in the clear to the clipboard.

Pieter

Thanks Dick ...

I still don't get there from here .... It's not compatibility mode ....

Hi Hugh,

Do you have JAVA scripting enabled? If not, try this. You can also add "identitysafe.norton.com" to the trusted sites in IE and see if this helps.

In case this still does not work, are you able to bring up these pages in another browser like Firefox?

Best wishes.

Allen

I have the latest Java installed but I don't know how I specifically check that scripting is enabled -- I thought there was a checkbox in IE / Tools / Internet Options / Advanced relating to scripting (apart from the debugging ones) but I don't see it.

This is IE 8 in Compatibility mode.

I'll try adding that URL to Trusted but it probably needs closing IE and reopening so I'll come back on that.

Just did that and no change.

I don't have any other browsers and don't particularly make changes even temporarily at the moment ....

Hi Hugh,

The scripting option is in Internet Options > Security tab. Then if you have the iD safe portal site still in the trusted sites zone then click on the Trusted Sites option at the top, then click Custom Level. You will find the scripting options there.

Allen

I had already entered the URL you gave me for the Help link.

In the scripting section of that massive list of items, all scripting items seem to be enabled.

In some other sections there are references to things like scriptlets (disabled) but it's too complex tor me to mess with.

The Unable screen lists:

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

  • Internet connectivity has been lost.
  • The website is temporarily unavailable.
  • The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
  • The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
  • There might be a typing error in the address.
  • If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

So I'll check the last item and come back

Here's the Advanced Settings SSL as was:

capture_11042011_200716.jpg

and I successively enabled each unset item in SSL and TLS but with no effect without and with shutting down IE and trying the URL to HELP

So it must be Norton's fault ....... <eg>

HI Hugh,

I'm not sure what to make of it, I certainly don't have any problems getting to the ID safe web portal site. :smileyhappy:

I think you have more than one computer and I know you have at least a dual-boot system. Have you tried getting to this site from one of the other OS partitions or another computer?

Allen

At the moment it's all I can do to keep this one going on Norton and Compuserve -- got a lot on at the moment but if I've a moment over the weekend I'll reboot and see what happens.

Thanks for all the help.
