The scan failed because of a scan engine problem

Bought Norton Antivirus 12 for Mac, installed on a clean install of Lion 10.7.2. When I run Norton System Scan I get "The scan failed because of a scan engine problem. Run LiveUpdate to get the latest version." When I run Live Update I get "Your software is up to date."

Hi Lee, Yes there are. 3 folders with names such as: "20111206.002" each of those folders have thirty or so files with extensions of .dib and .dat . There is also a "Frameworks" folder.

OK, thanks, that's relevant because it means LIveUpdate did download and install the scan engine and defs,  Is there also a file named engine.mfst, and if so what is its size?  Also, have you tried restarting your machine to see if that helped?

engine.mfst is 343 bytes. And yes, restarted many times since installing. I installed a couple of weeks ago and did not realize it wasn't working. Thanks.

It's 343 bytes. Is that the right size?

The size can vary, but that's in the range I would expect.  This is an unusual situation I haven't run across with NAV 12.  Can you follow the instructions at the page below and attach the resulting output file?  This may yield some insight.

Thanks.  So far I don't see any reason the scan shouldn't be working.  Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the product? This should not make a difference in theory, but perhaps there was some unseen error that caused improper installation.
