I have been happily using Norton products since 1985 and regularly recommend them to my friends. Now that I have a nice new Galaxy S4 I am considering purchasing Norton Mobile Security, but am not comfortable with the use of SMS messages to lock a phone.
My questions:
Is there a user guide available? So far the most information I have found on how to use the product has been in the forums which is kind of scary especially since you could lock your phone and not be able to get access again if you are not careful – which I understand a number of people have done!!!
Is there a way to disable the SMS lock feature which seems redundant for users of Samsung products and could potentially be used maliciously to lock a phone?
There have been problems in the past but I am not aware of any recently and I have suspected that some previous reports of oddly locked phones may have not been from the original owners of the devices.
The only way another person could lock your phone using an SMS message would be if they sent the SMS to your phone and knew your PIN code. Even if they did you could unlock it by typing in your PIN or sending the PIN by SMS to the device or even if you had forgotten your PIN you could do it by logging on to mobilesecurity.norton.com and sending an unlock message from there. So I think you are fairly safe.
As NMS now offers a free one month trial of the fully functioning package why not try it at some point when you have the time and leisure to test it out. I think you will find it fairly easy and not scary.
The second part of your query has already been aptly answered by Andmike, for the first part of it, please refer this link https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/norton-mobile/current/info. This link will take you to the help topics page for all Norton Mobile products, you can also search for other topics too.
In case you are unable to find something, please let us know and we would be glad to assist.
I understand that we should all take things posted in forums with the proverbial grain of salt, but it is sometimes hard to tell which comments are valid and which are not.
I must admit that part of my concerns come from the initial look at the product a year ago. At that time it was not completely clear how to use the device lock feature, and how to recover from a false lock based on the information I was seeing in my Norton account and in the FAQ. The current FAQ are nice but they are by no means as complete as they should be.
I have installed the trial version. Is see that much work has been done in the past year.
Overall I still feel that for a Samsung user many of the features in NMS are unnecessary, but for the most part the ones I don’t need can be ignored. I have not noticed any significant impact on my phones performance which is good, and I like that I am no getting notifications when a scan has been completed. I see no evidence that NMS is doing anything while I browse the Internet with Chrome which I am taking as a good thing. The App Advisor seems to be unnecessary for a more experienced user.
