"This is Spam" button only works directly in inbox

Since upgrading to NIS2011 I have noticed that the "This is Spam" button in outlook 2007, only works when highlighting files in my inbox. I have quite a few subfolders under inbox and emails are diverted to the relevant folders on arrival. However if a spam message arrives in a subfolder and I highlight it - the "This is Spam" button is greyed out and does not work.

Is there a way to enable this button in all outlook folders?

Kind regards

Philip

Several of us have this same problem.  This update version fixed a non-problem and created a real problem.

Hello plhermette

I was desperate to have the "This is spam" option enabled and did this -- Moved the sub-folders under Inbox to "Personal folders" so that it is no more a sub-folder :-) . And then close and reopen outlook.. And the "This is spam" option gets enabled.

Yeah, it might take some time if you have a large number of sub-folders under Inbox.

Hope this helps!

I have a lot of subfolders and I often back up my inbox and synchronise it between pc's and my laptop. I also have a large number of rules set up to divert emails to these subfolders. I object to having to rearrange all this and alter the way I work just because symantec have a bug in their programme! I would also be really irritated if I spend hours sorting it out only to find the bug has been rectified in an update. If I spend good money purchasing a programme it is ot unreasonable to expect it to work properly.

Philip

Yeah agree with you... I chose to do it because it wasnt great work for me + i do not know when an update would be released.

Just FYI, i dint have to modify any rules.Outlook took care of it. And my mails are diverted properly even after I moved the sub-folders.

And posts on the forum are just suggestions.

Point taken - and thanks for the suggestion, I didn't mean to be rude - I'm just frustrated!

We have reproduced this issue in-house with Outlook 2007. We are not seeing it with Outlook 2010. Is anybody here seeing this issue with Outlook 2010?

The root cause of the problem has not been determined yet and, therefore, I have no way of knowing when a fix will be made available.

This is a possible & interesting work around if you only have a few subfolders.

I have hundreds of subfolders and they are not just one-level down, sometimes 3 or 4 levels.  I also have been using this folder structure for over 10 years and have all of my yearly archive PST files that use the same folder structure.

I also have hundreds of rules feeding those folders and over 3500 contacts supported by those rules.  Rules have normally always moved email to subfolders under the Inbox if they were going to be kept.

Presently, with "This Is Spam" grayed-out everywhere but when looking directly at the Inbox (? and folders at the same level ?) I have been using the Outlook Junk Mail right-click.  Not as convenient (or pretty) as the NAS tool bar.  I think this is probably creating two block lists.

Everything was fine when I had to work with the separate Norton Antispam folder.  Why did anyone want to "fix" it?

Does anyone with NIS 2011 (18.5..0.125) have "This Is Spam" active (i.e., not grayed-out) when looking through the "Unread Mail" search folder, or looking directly at any Inbox subfolder?

I have it with Outlook 2003.

I meant I have the problem with Outlook 2003.

Also, I created a new folder called "Inbox2" for "Mail and Post Items" at the same level as the "Inbox" under the "Personal Folders, "  I moved some email into this folder and marked it as unread.  The "This Is Spam" button is still / also grayed-out when looking directly at emaill in the Inbox2 folder.  The Inbox2 folder icon is just a simple folder (like the other Inbox subfolders) but different than the primary Inbox icon.

I also added the "Add Sender to Blocked Sender List" to the Standard Toolbar and saw that it still functions correctly even through the Unread Mail Favorite Folder.

I looked at Inbox2 again later this afternoon (after rebooting computer) and notice that the "This Is Spam" was now active.

I added another folder Inbox3 at the same level as the Inbox to double check, and again the "This Is Spam" was inactive (grayed-out).

I then shutdown Outlook and re-opened Outlook and the Inbox3 folder (at the Inbox level) now had the "This Is Spam" active.

I also notice that a "Not Junk" button appears on the Standard Toolbar when looking at the Junk Mail folder.  The "This Is Not Spam" does appear to be tracking (active) with this button.

It seems that at Symantec, the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. I spent over 3 hurs in support sessions on this issue last night, and nobody at their customer support was familiar with the problem. Now, on this forum, I see that Symantec have acknowledged the problem, but can't find a fix! A bit lame for a company with a reputation like theirs. I'm serously considering uninstalling.

I see this issue with Outlook 2010, well sort of. Sometimes the "This is Spam" and "This is not Spam" buttons are grayed out for items in a search folder - sometimes "This is Spam" is active and sometimes the "This is not Spam" button is active even for new messages in the folder which are not classified as Spam, neither automatically nor manually.

Another note to highlight,

I have had the "Junk E-mail Options" (Tools|Options|Junk E-mail) in Outlook (2003) set to "No Automatic Filtering.  Mail from blocked senders is still moved to Junk E-mail folder."  since I preferred using the NIS Antispam function and did not want any possible contentions between the two programs.

That is correct. Only folders that existed at the time when Outlook was launched are tracked. For all unknown at the time Outlook is launched folders the toolbar buttons are greyed out. If you just created the folder it will work correctly the next time Outlook is launched.

And after another five hours in conclave with Symantec Customer Support (I must admit, they try hard) I am STILL waiting for a solution.... apparently "the technical people will get back to me. I'll post here first should i hear anything.

Not strictly true. The correct statement should be: Only root folders that existed at the time when Outlook was launched are tracked. -- At least that is the case on my PC...

And, by the way, the problem also occurs with Outlook's "virtual" search folder Unread Mail. Presumably this is either because the Unread Mail is not a root level folder, and/or because it is created dynamically at run time after Outlook starts...

Any solution or patch for this yet?

Mystifyingly (and infuriatingly) no....:smileymad:
