Hello @Arugula177
Yeah, I kinda’ miss Download Insight.
Users complain…Norton too noisy.
Users complain…Norton too quiet.
IF, there were a definitive way to keep Live Updates from downloading 24.xx, the use of Intelligent Updater may be an alternative until. There is a release and fixes done / missed can get weeded out. Just thinking out loud again.

I’ll let you know in a couple of days ![]()
I have turned auto LiveUpdate off and done an update of the defs using the Intelligent updater.
If I don’t run it manually it ‘shouldn’t’ send me to 24.
See that’s the problem right there … Users !! they are the problem, get rid of them and everything will be all right ![]()
Installed version 24.10.9535.1052 on Monday as part of the regular update to virus and spyware protection. Immediately the update was finished a huge message “You are not protected” appeared on the screen and the Norton icon in the system tray had a red X rather than the usual green tick. I clicked on the icon, assuming that I could find out what the problem was, only for the Norton icon to disappear and for my computer to freeze. I had to power it off using the power button. When I turned my computer on again, Windows entered Automatic Repair Mode. After several minutes the message “Automatic repair couldn’t repair your PC” was displayed and some options were provided. I phoned Norton support only to be told that the problem was nothing to do with Norton and I needed to contact Microsoft as Windows was the problem. When I pressed the point that everything had been fine until the Norton update was installed I was told that I could speak to the ‘Superior support team’ but that a fee would be charged. I refused that option. I tried to start my PC is safe mode but that made no difference. Windows entered automatic repair mode. I had the option to ‘reset’ my PC by reinstalling Windows or by rolling back to the last restore point. I thought I would try the latter first. The last restore point was immediately before the Nortons update was installed and it was indicated that the update would be removed. Once the procedure was completed my PC once again worked perfectly normally. The problem was definitely caused by the Nortons update. I am now in the situation where the Norton icon in the system tray has the exclaimation mark in the yellow diamond indicating that there is an update to install. I called Norton support again and explained that removing the update had fixed my computer. I provided the version number and asked that I be notified when it was safe to install the update as my ‘virus and spyware definitions’ are not up to date, apparently leaving my computer vulnerable. I was told that that was not possible. So what am I supposed to do? There is a bug-filled update that I cannot download and Norton have basically refused to do anything about it. Maybe I should just get a refund and change my provider.
Update: Regarding prevention of stopping LU from running, when it is clearly disabled in our Norton UI settings. I looked into the Windows Task Scheduler for entries to correlate with the previous two instances where LU ran during my test times overnight last night. Here they are right in the history section Norton 360 Patcher.
Finding the specific task that is scheduled to run given settings with Windows flags to start it I believe we can “edit” the entry for the patcher trigger, reboot and retest to see what results we get.
I don’t have a specific test machine in hand to do this at the moment. And I DO NOT recommend anyone reading this to do so either. This is just informative and I will be doing this tomorrow when time permits . Allowing for a full 24 hour cycle to see if no updates get forced. If that is the case, those who wish to remove 24.xx can use this as a workaround to keep 24.xx off their machines and remain on an earlier release before 24.xx. Remain updated using Intelligent Updater as we wait for whatever fixes or lack there of come for the present new release. Feed back is a must from everyone.

Your words. Not mine.
Same here with my computers. Just turn off “Remote Control” and both will show you, that your devices are protected.
I also want to find out if you can update the virus and spyware definitions but not update the program. Complete disaster for me on Monday when v24 downloaded. Norton shut down and PC froze. Had to turn off manually and when Windows started it went into automatic repair mode which failed. I rolled back to the latest restore point, which was right before the update was installed and everything is now fine. Except that I’m getting a message from Norton that my virus and spyware definitions are not up to date and that my PC is at risk. My current version is 22.24.8.36. Even if v24 didn’t corrupt my computer I wouldn’t want it if the backup to a USB drive has been disabled. I do not want to backup to the cloud. Lord knows what Norton would do, or allow to be done, with all that data given they don’t seem to care about their subscribers. Looks like I might be switching to McAfee or some other provider.
Hello @bibbes ,
Wow! Yes that works
So should I leave it OFF?
It was ON by default after installation/reinstallation.
What would you recommend?
Thanks - I think I got the automatic cloud off, but I somehow doubt it’s going to help. I was going to keep the 6 PUPs in quarentaine but decided to try to re-install Norton. They’re gone now… so I hope I didn’t really need them. The re-install didn;t help anything, either.
Lots of fun, this update. I didn’t buy Norton so I could mess with my computer, it’s just not good enough. Is Windows defender good enough if I just got rid of Norton, I wonder? I’ll have to look into other companies, I guess. My confidence in Norton is very, very low. I’ve been using it for maybe 10 years or more, a real shame it’s got to this.
FWIW.
The Norton Early Adopter Program, if it’s still current, indicates that, although the early release software could be buggy, it wouldn’t put your device at ‘risk’.
So, with all the posts criticising V24. Is V24 ‘SAFE’, or just mega-buggy.
A Norton Statement, reassuring issues are being addressed in real time, would be appreciated.
IS V24 SAFE ¦ OR DOES IT PUT A DEVICE AT RISK ?
@SoulAsylum
Don’t know how my…as test: helps users keep v24 off their machine.
I was curious whether my…as test: stops v24 LiveUpdate.

@bjm So I gather that you did run the test I was offering in my last post. As I read your post above, live updates, which is where the reinstallation of 24.xx will occur was mooted. Manually calling LU to run DID garner a fresh definitions update. Therefore I assume we are in concert and on the same page with your results? If so that would be a definitive way to have users go back to the previous version and remain on it while using Intelligent Updater to keep things nice and tidy?

Hello @SoulAsylum
Just that. I don’t recall Norton 360 Patcher &or Suite Emergency Update with v22 tasks. v22 related tasks may be different.
Note: I’m at 24.10.9535.880.
I’ve read users reference 24.10.9535.1052 [e.g.,: [here]]
Thanks for that observation. I was of the assumption that editing all those scheduled tasks in Task Scheduler, for the sake of not missing the one that would actually trigger another NGC version download would be prudent. You actually went that direction with your test.
Going forward, lets test this over an extended time period, say a 7 day stretch to see if anything gets thrown at the install with the edits in place. Just to make sure we have something that has been validated by more than one user, on separate machines. What say ye? ![]()
Edited: I am also still on 24.10.9535.880 definitions are 241030-2

I’m not feeling so inclined. I’m not feeling inclined to urge v22.
I’ve pushed URLhaus samples against v24.
My v24 feels (other than Cloud Backup) okay for protection.
I’ve played with v24 (Reset to Default, Repair Norton, RnR n’ clean install). So, my observations are…just my observations.
I’m just not feeling so inclined to urge v22.
v24 issues need to be addressed and were v24 issues that bad.
Then v24 needs to be pulled.
I’m okay with my v24…at this time.

Ok, thanks!! I also agree version 24.xx should NOT continue to be available via LU. Personally, 24.xx doesn’t meet all the expectations of the previous version. Nothing more than another BETA release, so why doesn’t Norton create a BETA channel to gather their telemetric data instead?
As a whole 24.xx. Its NOT user friendly in any small respect to customers who lost a ton of abilities with this release. Almost zero control of what they need to work from home, etc. Not to mention usage in a business environment.
My dime is this. Customers aren’t BETA testers and are having to be so without their consent. Any EULA that states a company “reserves the right to push new features at will and without other consent” should also be addressed. Companies are doing this at the paid expense of customers.
Conversely I will test this myself and post the findings here when done. Users deserve a way to keep their functionality intact while issues are addressed with the current version. Hopefully this will help in that regard. In the end stage, using this method if tested and works, will constitute “using the workaround shall be at the risk of the user, not myself nor Norton”.

When using the VPN in Version 24, the local drives are lost even although Access Local Drives with VPN is ticked.
Hi @mandc, So after all the hassles you’ve been through…cloud backup, the 6 pups, and I’m sure I’m forgetting some others, you went for it; the re-install. I’m sorry it didn’t work for you. It hasn’t helped anyone else either who has tried with great hopes that the problems would go away on this thread.
The same thought occurred to me yesterday about Windows Update. I had a look at it as it sat there idle. I’m not impressed with the ui. Some articles say you really should get another anti-virus program, others say Defender with the free version of Malwarebytes on call scanner work just fine. Me personally, I’d prefer to have headaches with some other named brand of anti-virus, now that Norton is nothing but a big headache. What a shame so many different things are whacked out with this new Norton. It would have been very pleasing if we all really liked it.
Cordialement,
