I have Thunderbird 3.0.1 on my 64 bit 8 core Vista PC. Ever since I installed Norton Internet Security 2010, I have had a 10 second delay every time I select a new email message to view - even if it is an existing rather than a new message. During this time Thunderbird goes 100% CPU, and Windows reports that it's not responding. This is making Thunderbird virtually unusable.
After advice from the mozilla forum, I uninstalled NIS, whereupon the problem went away. On reinstalling NIS, back came the 10 second delay.
An suggestions on how I can resolve this please? Is it a known issue? If not, how do I raise a support ticket?
If you do not compact your folders regularly, which actually physically removes messages that you have earlier deleted, it is possible that folder corruption in some degree has occurred which would be consistent with the symptoms you have described. Mozilla has an article explaining the situation and offering steps to take to resolve the issue here:
I have tried various things, including compacting regularly (which I have done since long before this issue surfaced) and deleting all the msf files and letting it create new ones. It makes no difference. Whenever I click on a different message, Thunderbird goes 100% CPU for 10 seconds - during which time it doesn;'t respond to anything - then suddenly displays the message as if nothing had gone wrong.
What I can't get my brain around is the fact that Process Monitor shows no evidence of NIS activity during this 10 seconds, but if I uninstall NIS, the delay reduces markedly. I also can't see how it' can be caused by folder corruption - unless every folder is corrupted that is.
I'll certainy try turning off email checking, but I can't do this at present as I'm not at home. I'll respond later today (UK time).

Turning off email checking didn't make any difference. However turning off smart firewall halved the time it took to display the next message. (Thunderbird was in the list and set to "auto". When I changed it to "allow", the delay displaying the next message increased from 10 to 13 seconds. After turning it off it's now 7 seconds - better but still unsatisfactory.)
I have a feeling that what may be happening is that access to the mail folder file is being denied b NIS for a set period every time Thunderbird tries to read it - possibly due to some issue with the NIS file access monitor. And as a result Thunderbird hangs until the file is made available to it. Certainly the delay is constant, and not dependent on either the size of the mail file or the size of the email message. Is there any way to control this behaviour, if this is indeed the case? (I can't see that NIS is scanning it for viruses, as there is no evidence of any significant processing by NIS during the time that Thunderbird is unresponsive.)
Another thing is could this be an issue specific to 64 bit operating systems - 8 core in my case? A Google search doesn't find that masses of other people have had similar issues. And I had a variety of issues with AGV free and PC Tools Spyware Doctor that forced me to uninstall them on this PC, and again couldn't find much from others about similar problems. I'm an application developer by profession, and sometimes find that our products have issues on 64 bit platforms but not on 32 bit platforms. Just a thought.
I've noticed something else that may help to narrow this down. When I click on the root of a thread, I am immediately shown a summary of the messages in the thread. When I then select one of these messages, I get the long delay again.
If I am correct, it is getting the summaries from the mail summary (msf) fiile, which clearly has the msf extension. However the email folder files don't have extensions. So I am wondering if there is an issue accessing the mail files because they don't have an extension.
I'm having the same problem, but on a different setup: xp pro sp3, NIS 2010. I have email antivirus and spam scanning off, but that doesn't help. It doesn't matter whether or not the email is plaintext or html: it takes very long for the message to load. This is beyond annoying--it is really unacceptable.
I'm running Thunderbird 3 on XP Home and Thunderbird 3.02 on Win 7 Home on a 32 bit dual core, dual boot system. I have email scanning enabled on both, antispam disabled on both. I don't use encryption or certificates. Allow Windows Search and Global Search and Indexing are both disabled in the Tbird options settings.
In both instances, when I click on an email the response is immediate. I hope any of this information is useful to you while you troubleshoot.
