Tick icon changed colour

I notice today the tick icon which normally is green circle with a white tick has changed to a grey circle with a black tick. If i double click on the black tick it changes back to green with white tick. Does anyone know why the change in  colour?

Good to hear.

Also the @JustRight suggestion to set 'Boot Time Protection' to Normal has sped it up for me.

Status update:

We have identified the root cause of the “Norton System tray icon is gray on system startup” issue. Once the fix is released, we will update the Norton Product Update Announcements blog section and the forum posts. Thank you for your patience.

Hi there,

Look, I don't know if this will help you guys, but I also had this issue with the newer versions of the Norton icon taking ages to change to it's 'normal' state.

For my systems I found that the fix was to change the 'Boot Time Protection' option from "Off" to "Normal".  This seemed to resolve this issue and now by the time my normal startup items have run and the system is ready for use Norton is ready to go with the normal icon displayed.

Norton Boot Time Protection option.jpgGood Luck.

I have had a detailed response from Norton who say that the problem is being worked on and that a fix is expected with the next product release, expected within three months.  They did suggest that the problem could meantime be mitigated by turning off "boot time protection".  But this isn't really helpful since it is turned off by default, and most of us won't have changed it.

Wow. Super helpful. How about you just sort the actual issue? I can't believe there's another patch this morning and it STILL isn't fixed. What a bunch.

Try emailing

[Removed] (boss man I believe) and [Removed]

about this issue and the abysmal customer service his company provides. Just done that very thing myself.

I am scunnered with this issue - it takes a clear 5 minutes now for the green tick to appear and prior to that what's going on, is my PC "insecure", I don't know...

Still waiting for the grey tick to change to green? When is this problem going to be resolved?

Their total lack of interest in fixing this/communicating what's going on is much more likely to make me upgrade to Defender...

This is not an ideal solution but I did the free upgrade from Norton Security Deluxe to Norton 360 Deluxe and the yellow circle with green checkmark shows up quicker.

Weird, I was about to ask the same question.

Good point, well made though...

Just to keep this on the front burner and top of the list.

Norton has been "looking at" this (vs fixing it) since first reported in May - almost THREE (3) MONTHS ago!!!

How hard can it be to either remove what caused the problem, or speed up the self check process?

Hi,

Thank you for reporting this issue on the Norton Community. We are sorry about the inconvenience, but we have reported the issue, 'Norton System tray icon is gray on system startup' to the concerned teams. We are working on a fix, and once it has been made available, we will update this thread. Once again, we are sorry about the delay. Thank you.

I emailed the Symantec heid bummer directly about this and the poor support on here and got a reply from the Norton Escalation Team, shared below for any fellow sufferers...

"My name is David and I form part of the Norton Escalation Team based in Dublin, Ireland. I am reaching out to you in regards to your email sent to our CEO, where you are asking us for more information regarding an issue reported with the Norton status icon.

I understand that the Norton status icon on the taskbar remains grey for several minutes before correctly showing the green status, and that yourself and several other of our customers present in our community forums are experiencing this situation.

I do apologise for any inconvenience this might be causing.

The grey status shows up while Norton is loading all its components in memory and should, in an average situation, not last the 3-4 minutes you mentioned (it will depend on the Boot Time Protection setting, however I can see from your posts that this situation unfortunately happens for you regardless of the setting chosen). I can confirm that our Engineering team is looking into this matter since it was first reported and a fix for it will be included in a future update for your Norton product.

We will have to wait for the patch to be released in order ensure this issue is fixed, but should you have any questions meanwhile please do not hesitate to reply to this email."

I left Norton and went back to McAdee. I have LifeLock for over 10 years, I hope Norton doesn’t ruin it. Good luck everyone.

2-3 minutes? Consider yourself lucky. Mine are more like 5-6.

When is someone from actual Symantec going to have the courtesy to reply to the question in hand? And, bonus question, given over the last few days there are reports that Defender is now just as good, why should I bother sticking with Norton with this lousy customer service experience?

Norton update 22.18.0.213 installed yesterday - still no fix!!!!

This is the second update since the problem was reported.

Still taking 2-3 minutes after start or restart for my taskbar icon to turn from grey with black check to colored with green check.

Windows 7 Pro x64

Been over 2 months since i started this thread and still the grey tick. Now got use to waiting several minutes until the green tick appears. Doesn't look like this problem is going to be fixed any time soon.

So to get back to the actual question... taking ages for the icon to go green... when is this getting fixed?

Thanks.
