Time limits and web monitoring not working

My son is using the latest version of Norton Family on his Windows 7 HP dv6 Notebook PC. He browses the web with Chrome and Windows IE8.

We have Norton Family Premier however the web monitoring and time limits are not being enforced. I notice that though I can find the NF program in the list of programs to uninstall, it doesn't appear in the bottom right corner of the computer. I'm not sure if it's actively running. We also have Symantec Endpoint Protection (from the State Dept) running on his laptop.

Any guidance you can give on why it's not monitoring his web activity, despite being turned on on the NF settings page and showing a green check mark for his laptop, would be much appreciated.

Hi cattoja,

You mentioned "... I'm not sure if it's actively running..".  When you go to Settings -> Web after you log onto your Norton Family account online, do you see any Web activities?

If you log onto the PC as your monitored child and try to access a forbidden website, do you get blocked?

Thanks,

Katie

Katie, many thanks for your message. I don't see any web activity when I log in to Norton Family online. Right now we haven't blocked any websites, we have it set to flash a warning and send an alert. I haven't received alerts in a while either, though we did for a while after it was first installed. We mainly wanted to use the program to set and enforce time limits.

Hi cattoja,

The reason I asked if a forbidden website gets blocked in my previous post is that I wanted to know if the child's Windows account is being monitored (gets set up corrected or not).  Please select the option “Block the site” at Settings -> Web  online for now to see if the function works.

If you are not blocked when trying to access an unwanted website, please check out the Get Started Help file below to see if you have setup everything correctly.

Katie,

The website was blocked, and now the time restrictions appear to be working, will this also activate the monitoring and time counting? Not sure what I had set wrong, but I'll let you know if this doesn't solve the issue.

Katie,

I am sorry, I spoke prematurely, it turns out it was the parental controls built into the laptop that were enforcing the time restrictions. Once I disabled those, I tested the web browser to see if it would block a website (I used sears.com just as a test) and it didn't work, either for IE or Chrome. I think I don't have the system properly configured.

I ran through the setup document that you sent the link to, but I didn't resolve the issue. The software is installed on his computer, I see it in the programs list, and his computer appears in the list of devices in our Norton Family account. The computer has two accounts Admin and his. Both appear and his account is marked for protection. The admin account is not, yet when I enter into his account with his password, it doesn't block the test website.

My son has an HP laptop running Windows 7. I also installed enterprise Symantec Endpoint Protection anti-virus software that I received from the federal government (I'm an employee).

Hi cattoja,

Thanks for the update.  Would you mind letting me know how you are trying to block sears.com?  Was the sears.com on the forbidden list at Settings -> Web?

At one point, you did see a website was blocked.  Was it blocked by Norton Family or any other parental control program?

Thanks,

Katie

Katie, yes, I blocked the site by logging in to our Norton Family account and adding it to the forbidden website list under Settings>>Web.

Regarding my previous comment about the website being blocked, I was a bit imprecise. What happened was I tried to log in to my son's account and was stopped because the computer said it was outside of the time limits, I didn't actually try to get to a website. That time limit was being enforced by the parental controls built into the HP laptop, not by another program. When I realized this, I disabled them and then tried to go to the sears.com website to see if Norton Family was blocking it. That's when I saw that it wasn't stopping me from going to it, despite the fact that it is still on the forbidden list.

Hi cattoja,

These tell me that Norton Family probably is not installed or configured correctly on the PC.  Can you please use the link I sent in my previous email and install Norton Family again on the PC?

Thanks,

Katie

Katie, I will be happy to do so, should I delete the device profile from our Norton Family account as well before I reinstall the software?

Hi cattoja,

You don't need to delete the device profile from your Norton Family account.  Just log onto your Norton Family online account and download Norton Family and follow the instructions described in the link I sent you earlier to  make sure the child's profile is monitored.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks,

Katie

Katie,

I reinstalled the software on my son's computer but did not see the Norton family icon in the system try to complete the rest of the guide you sent me. I then uninstalled the software, deleted the device from the Norton profile, and reinstalled. I still cannot see Norton family in the system tray on the bottom right, and unfortunately now the device doesn't appear on the profile anymore when I log into our Norton Family account.

Many thanks,

Hi cattoja,

Can you please let me know what you see at end of the Norton Family installation? Do you see any error message?

Also, what version of Endpoint Protection anti-virus software do you have on the PC?

Thanks,

Katie

Katie,

It is version 12.1.2015.2015. I installed the software via the administrator account, and it appears in the list of installed programs in my son's profile. I also changed my son's profile to a normal user and installed through his profile, changing his profile back to limited user after the installation. I didn't see any errors, but didn't ever receive the pop up asking me for my Norton family user name and password. I installed the software via the Norton family webpage though, while logged in, and by using the install applet that automatically detects the device, so I thought that it may have already installed with my user information encoded.

Hi cattoja,

Thanks for the update.  I'll check with the team on this and get back to you.

Thanks,

Katie

Hi cattoja,

When you logon onto your Norton Family online account and go to Settings -> Profile, do you see the children are protected?  If they are not checked in front of their name, can you please check it and SAVE it?

Katie,

Thanks for your reply, sorry for the delay in responding. When I got to Profile>Settings, I see only one device listed, our iMac home computer. My son's Windows laptop does not appear. His name is checked in green for the iMac as per the screenshot you sent me. I have tried to add his laptop as I explained in my previous post but can't get it to appear on the Profile.

Hi cattoja,

I'd like to have a remote session with you.  If you are interested in having one with me, please send me a private message via the forum for details.

Thanks,

Katie
