Tool Bar Updater Service uses 95% of CPU-causes BSOD crashes

I have been getting multiple BSOD crashes attributed to 'Tool Bar Updater Service' on a VISTA CPU.

This problem was solved by Uninstalling "START NOW" from the Control Panel\programs feature.

The ICON for 'Start Now' looks like a yellow orange.

I can not understand why Norton did not detect this malware which took almost three weeks to discover

and delete.  I kept getting WMI 10 messages and unexpected shutdowns and restarts.  This is definately

a problem program and should be on Nortons malware list.

Hi sci-med,

Start Now Toolbar is considered by most antimalware products as a PUP - a Potentially Unwanted Program.  In other words, while many users would consider the program to be a nuisance, it is not really malicious, and it does offer some functionality that makes the program beneficial to some users who might choose to install it.  Many Anti-Spyware programs will detect PUPs and offer the user the option of removing them.  Most Antivirus products do not, since PUPs, annoying as they might be, are not actually dangerous to run from a security standpoint.  It sounds like your toolbar may have been poorly written, but that is a software issue, not a security issue.
