Tracking thread for Norton 25.9 / 25.10 / 25.11 / 25.12 releases

@SoulAsylum - please accept that I do have a vague idea what I’m talking about. This isn’t “spikes” in cpu usage, it’s a long term situation that only exists whilst Norton is in the system tray. As I was writing the last sentence, there was a spike, from 50% cpu to 100% cpu, which stopped this window updating for about 5 seconds. Now back down to 50%. Sometime this occurs from startup like today, sometimes it takes an hour to appear.

BUT, without fail, if I open the Norton App so that its window is displayed, the cpu usage drops to near nothing (<2%).

This is nothing to do with graphics cards, memory etc. It is to do with a defect in Norton’s application, that’s exhibited itself on three completely different PCs that I own.

I recommend running the Norton Support Tool then, contacting customer support, they may be able to determine what the cause is with a contact to the next tier support.

I believe that I’ve already done that, but I guess that there’s no harm in doing it again

Hello.

I don’t know if my experience will help, but most peoples problems may go deeper than their OS settings.

I encountered a similar issue a little over a week ago after a massive Windows 11 update, it took almost an hour and several reboots to complete. I noticed that after this update I had to start performing this test code challenge (A1B2C3) to get to my PIN login screen, this was new, I never seen it before, I just rolled with it because I thought it was something new that came out with the new update as an added security feature. NOPE! IT’S NOT SECURITY FEATURE AT ALL.

Over the period of about a week I noticed since the update that my performance was lacking, and it reset a lot of features, windows, and apps seemed buggy, then my system crashed, I got the BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH AND A DOA TROUBLE CODE ON MY GIGABYTE AORUS MOBO, so I’m in a panic, I’m thinking my PC just died on me, and after four hours of reboots and sifting through WTFDOIDO forums which advised that I check my BIOS, I logged into my BIOS and low and behold I discovered that MICROSOFT UPDATE reset ALL OF MY CUSTOM BIOS SETTINGS, it even turned off TPM which is required to run Windows 11 on new systems, and that’s why everything was so buggy, and that update almost murdered my PC.

So after a hard shut down by cutting off the power supply and a hard restart, resetting all my custom settings in BIOS and turning the TPM 2.0 BACK ON that MICROSOFT UPDATE TURNED OFF. I log back in and get a notice that the update didn’t install correctly and I had to REE-INSTALL Windows 11, version 25H2 (repair version), and YET after that was done, before I could log into my desktop I had to hit RESET, and then pound on the DELETE KEY to get back into my BIOS to reset everything again! :grimacing: :backhand_index_pointing_left:

Oh what fun! There’s nothing like getting a lump of coal from MICROSOFT for the holidays.

Again, my issue may not be related to your issue, but it might be something that may help.

So there’s no longer any option to ignore alerts with 25.12.10212.0. I uninstalled/reinstalled due to an issue, and now Norton sees fit to annoy me with the orange exclamation point on the systray icon because I dare to turn automatic LiveUpdate off (I’ve always turned this off though it doesn’t seem to make a difference, I just prefer to run it manually) and “Your protection is strong, but could be stronger” sits on the home page because I don’t want to make my internet connection private.

Uninstalling/reinstalling was so much fun. I had to do that multiple times because ANOTHER problem came up. Whenever I reinstalled from the remove/reinstall tool, the installed version never progressed to the setup stage and would crash whenever I tried to sign in. I eventually figured out that I needed to download the installer separately and reinstall that way. Progressed to the setup stage perfectly after that, and I was able to sign in.

Finally, the issue why I uninstalled/reinstalled in the first place. This new Protection Score thing kept telling me that Behavioral Protection was off when it most certainly was not. Uninstalling/reinstalling actually fixed that for a bit, then it happened again earlier. Behavioral Protection is very much on. Even turned it off and on again to check if that made a difference in what Protection Score was reporting. It didn’t. I’m guessing it’s an annoying cosmetic bug. It went away after a while, but I’m guessing it’ll be back yet again soon.

I also like to do manual updates.
Norton shouldn’t keep notifying me since I was the one who chose it.
What the next version should have is to make the Norton version update manual, like it’s done in AVAST.
I don’t like Norton updating automatically to a new version that might come with more problems.

So, while “Your protection is strong, but could be stronger” continues to nag at me from the home screen (which is blatantly ignoring the ignore re: automatic LiveUpdate that I now somehow have in place again), I no longer have an orange exclamation point on the systray. It’s also still nagging me about having my internet connection set to public after I had to change it back because Norton once again changed it to private of its own accord. (Fix that and let me have the ignore for it back please!)

The Protection Score thing is still happening. I actually received a message from an employee about it, but the thing there is that I can’t reproduce it at will. It just happens. When I try to update the score, it sits on the updating thing forever before showing the clock with the z next to it, then when I leave that screen and come back, it once again gives me the option to update it with no indication that it even tried to update the score. In the event that it actually does update properly because the things it’s reporting are off aren’t off at all and I’m sometimes able to convince it of that, it ends up reoccuring after the next boot up. When I first settled back in after the reinstall fiasco, it actually tried to tell me, among other things, that I didn’t have a password on my Windows account, which was just hilariously dumb. It’s buggy as heck, anxiety-inducing, and prob’ly should be removed ‘til the bugs are worked out.

(On Win11 Home 24H2, not that I really want to be but that’s another subject entirely…thanks Microsoft)

Seems we’ve now moved on from 25.9 through 25.10, 25.11 and now have 25.12 but nothing has improved. The UDP (17) bug that was a major trigger for the original V25 tracking thread when V25 was first released is still not fixed. Security History is still flooded with UDP (17) rules log entries unless NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled.

Many of the other annoyances are still present and there is one that has changed but is still annoying. The “Scanning a new network” pop-up that appears after most (but not all) boot-ups persists in claiming my network is vulnerable because it is set to Private and not Public. Yet the network element of Smart Scan says there are no network problems. How can I have any faith in a product that disagrees with itself?

I’m prepared to accept that the Avast engine that is now the core of Norton is probably sound but the Norton product that Gen Digital have nailed together around it is a mess.

In one of my posts on that original tracking thread I suggested that I might move away to a different security product. That move is now closer as my subscription is about to expire. It is with some reluctance that I make this move as I’m a long term user of Norton. My current Norton 360 has evolved from an initial purchase of Norton Internet Security 2009 and I used earlier Norton products before that. So over 16 years of using Norton, during which time I have often loyally defended the Norton product against its critics. But loyalty should work both ways yet Gen Digital are showing no loyalty to its customers by killing off Norton v22 (“real” Norton) and serving up the current product, which is a shadow of its former self.

In preparation for moving away I have cancelled the auto-renewal of my subscription but even that has revealed another nonsense.

The usual annual subscription price here in the UK is around 80 pounds sterling. Since cancelling the renewal I’ve been bombarded with alerts and notifications offering renewal for 30 pounds for one year or 70 pounds for two years. But the subscription expiry dates quoted in those alerts are a complete nonsense. The last six have quoted dates of January 29th, January 31st, February 4th, February 21st, February 24th and February 27th. In reality, the actual expiry date is January 12th. But the number of remaining days stated in the alerts is correct making them even more of a nonsense. The one I received yesterday (Jan 29) said I had 14 days left until expiry on February 27th. Really? Not according to my calendar.

Problems are also creeping into other Gen products. For some time I’ve used CCleaner, originally developed by Piriform but now a Gen product. I now get regular CCleaner notifications saying that a new version is available but the offered version is the one I already have, as confirmed by doing a “Check for Updates” and being told “You are up to date”.

I have to make my final decision in the next two weeks but I suspect that I will be uninstalling Norton and moving to another security product.

I believe that I’ve now identified the source of this issue - TL;DR Norton 360 not handling very well failed connections to one of the URLs that it uses. See Focus window issue Norton 25.10 - Norton 360 for Windows - Norton Community

@Quatermain Have you disabled Co-Pilot and retested on this machine?

Following on from my previous post (#51), having seen the response from @globus5000 regarding the imminent version 26.1, I hung on as long as possible to see if that version was released before my subscription expired. But it hasn’t materialised so, as my subscription expired today, I’ve parted company with Norton.

Over the weekend I uninstalled Norton 360 and have now installed a 30-day trial of Bitdefender. I’m still on a learning curve with that but, from what I’ve seen so far, I like it a lot. I’m very impressed. There’s a lot about that product that reminds of how Norton used to be, with extensive configurability, meaningful detail in logs and notifications (unlike the skeletal summaries that Norton now offers) and even the reappearance of green check marks on Google search results. I’m pretty sure I’ll be purchasing a subscription at the end of the trial period.

So, after 17-plus years, I’m gone. Good luck to all those continuing the battle with Norton.

Out of interest, I will continue monitoring this thread and others on the forum to see how things progress (or otherwise).

Who knows, I may be back but, as things stand at the moment, I think that’s unlikely..

Ja, habe ich. Ohne Erfolg. Ich habe die Probleme mit Edge, Firefox und Chrome.
Windows 11 frisch installiert

  • Norton 360 frisch installiert
  • curl https://www.amazon.de funktioniert immer

I also think Norton needs to be more customizable.
One of the things I’ve been requesting is that the malware database be updated separately from the Norton program update.

Like Avast does in its product.

It would be good if Norton could bring back the MB count that appeared when updating the database, like it did before. Now it just shows a number saying “PROCESSING”.

That’s awful.
