You can disable almost all Norton notifications by going to settings / notifications.
Also, enabling NETBIOS is a security vulnerability. It was a program from the 1980s written by IBM that allowed communication between two devices. It is no longer needed and quite outdated.
I disabled NETBIOS a long time ago on my PCs and have never had any issues.
Yep!! Great issue to point out. Much the same as other depreciated networking protocols, and making things worse, replacements such as IPv6, are not being widely adapted across the industry fast enough to be mainstream. Thanks for the post.
I just ran Live Update and got this new version. It displays 25.7.10308 (build 25.7.10308.944). I have seen this on the previous version where sometimes it displays the last digit as .0 and sometimes it is a 3-digit, like this .9XX. Donāt know why.
I believe the latest was an emergency fix for one of the standing issues regarding desktop scaling, I could be mistaken on that. It may be the reasoning for seeing .000 naming scheme as well. Iām not privy to that information unfortunately. There are others on the forums who may have something from their perspective that give a clearer insight to the numbering schemes.
I am still back on old version you provided instructions for. I have 58 days left on my sub. Do you honestly think it is time to jump ship after decades of Symantec/Norton use?
@luddy Over the course of versions 24.xx / 25.xx releases, Iāve had two instances with not one, but BOTH these versions. Those issues, cost me both tons of time, money, and the loss of one device, coupled with more frustration than you can begin to imagine. Yet still, like you are doing, myself and others recommended, are sticking to the older version until, there is a clear message Norton products just wonāt work for our personal needs any longer. Personally, Iām not at that juncture yet. If that is the case on your part I would do what is my best interest above all else. Leaving Norton has to be a personal decision that is based on your needs. In that regard, and respectfully I canāt voice or make a recommendation for you.
Conversely!! I have seen this sort of thing come and go several times during my tenure here over the past 8 years. Change is never an easy thing to accept, but, its easier when the reason for that change, is in the end game, and, the company making those changes offers clarity. I donāt believe that is happening at the level is should here, but I will say this. It has always paid me dividends when I have stayed with a brand that I HAVE TRUSTED without much reservation for years on end.
Allow me to also say that, there are seriously major changes coming to not one, but three major operating systems in the near term. They are largely surrounded by data collection and, the use of AI, from where I sit there will be serious legal issues coming from that abuse of AI and its already taking place. Much of it happens in the background, while the user knows nothing the better. This is going to be THE show stopper for me when/if I have a confidence level any software I use is abusing my personal data and I have proof in hand. I will leave said software and not return because there will always be a market for those of us who prefer privacy and user functionality above all else.
Yes, I do understand that NetBIOS is an old protocol with security limitations but I kept it enabled as it allows for simple network discovery of other devices on my local network, in particular my Synology NAS, when using File Explorer on the PC. I have now enabled an alternative to NetBIOS discovery by turning on WS-Discovery in the Synology settings (itās OFF by default). I now only turn on NetBIOS to check whether each new version of Norton has a fix for the bug that crept in with the first release of version 25 - the bug that floods the Security History if NetBIOS is enabled. That bug was a significant driver in the early posts on this topic. Irrespective of the merits or otherwise of NetBIOS, the Norton product should be able to handle NetBIOS being enabled without repeatedly setting up firewall rules for it multiple times per second and flooding the Security History..
@SoulAsylum Well I just broke down for another year sub. Newegg had N360 for 10 devices for only $19.99 so I thought it might be worthwhile for another year.
Stay on the older version if you are on it for the short term. Those are my recommendations, in the end game N360 will get ironed out. Customer satisfaction always equates to poor or good bottom lines no matter what the industry.
@luddy Just got a message that a ticket was created by Norton for the intelligent update definitions. I can confirm they are now current with todays date on the latest release.
FWIW!! Need a memory jog here, I just did an removal of the older version 22.24.8.36 N360 and did a clean install of the latest version 25.7xx . The UDP 17 crap is once again filling my history. Disabling IPv6 on my network adapter and a reboot didnāt change things. Having been away from the latest version for a long time I need a memory jog for what others have done to fix this mess since we did it way back. Reading this entire thread, of 318 posts is tedious at best. TIA!!
On a side note, I DID find that after the install the service for viewing and changing the network adapter settings was disable in Windows services. I changed the startup type, saved the changes and rebooted. Something other may want to watch for when doing updates to their Norton installs.
Well, I INDEED had a hard brain-fart moment lol. Forgot to disable Netbios over TCP before the restart. Checked history and the UDP 17 crap is no longer being logged.
Just some info for those who are doing new installs. In Norton main settings under scans, there is a cog icon that will appear near the right side of each scan type when hovering your mouse there. Make sure you set your scans to generate a report when they are done. There is a link shown where these reports can be reviewed as well. Please review the below screenshot:
Since a few weeks ago Iāve been getting DNS errors at random times, where any browser and website would show DNS error messages. I can ping by IP, not by name. Disabling Firewall or Auto Protect doesnāt help. Restarting the PC fixes it. The problem sometimes happen at least once a day, and sometimes doesnāt happen the entire day. Sometimes it happens on boot where I canāt get to any website right away.
This is happening on more than one computer with Norton 360 installed. iPhones on wifi doesnāt have this problem, so I know ISP and router is not the issue.
Already did uninstall/reinstall and even restore default settings. Is this a problem with version 25? I had Norton 360 for sometime now, renewed last year Oct.
