Tracking thread for the new version 25.xx release

It happened again after flushing DNS. I cannot reach any website with any browser. Games also cannot go online. I can ping 8.8.8.8 and other IPs. The only way to get it working is to restart the PC. Disabling N360 doesn’t fix it.

This is happening on 2 PCs with N360 installed. My work computer, with a different antivirus, is not experiencing the problem. It is also connected via ethernet to the same router. So I know it is a recent N360 update that is causing this. When will this be fixed? Should I move to another brand of AV?

Disable the setting shown below and restart the machine. Recheck for anything changing. I’m not seeing the issue appear on Opera GX or Edge, current versions.

*Note: You might also want to clear caches on ALL your browsers as well.

I will try that and let you know if the problem is resolved. Will turning this feature off lessen my protection?

Thanks for taking the time to help. Appreciate it.

Thanks for the post back, let us know if anything changes for the better. Changing that setting won’t put you at risk. Here is what that scan is used for. HTTP3 IS NOT in widespread usage as of yet, in time it will be so I believe Norton is getting ahead of the game on that. Conversely, I also suspect that scan to have a lot to do with the UDP 17 scans in Norton firewall filling up our Norton history. There is a workaround for that as well, but the issue is it shouldn’t be happening. If I can ever nail down QUIC/HTTP3 as the cause that will be a wonderful day indeed.

AI Overview

HTTP/3 scanning refers to the process of inspecting HTTP/3 traffic, which utilizes the QUIC protocol and is the latest major version of HTTP. While HTTP/3 offers performance and security improvements, it also presents challenges for traditional scanning methods due to its reliance on QUIC and UDP instead of TCP.

Hi guys,

I also keep “Rule Windows Networking in Allowed UDP(17) traffic.” every minute, sometimes every 12 minutes, or 3 minutes. This happens on two different computers. I checked everything and I’m mostly certain that this is a legit Windows operation picked up by Norton as an information notification. By the end of the day, there are usually a thousand notifications piled up.

Is there any news on this problem?

Thx

Had a scare today. Running v22 with Live Update OFF. Lost my Verizon FIOS and when it came back this was on my screen. I did NOT initiate this at all. I noticed a Microsoft Security update had been installed at some point requiring a reboot. I was hesitant to reboot for the patching of the OS, but I closed the Norton alert with the X not selecting a choice and after reboot thank God v22 is still there. I made sure LU was still unchecked and it is. No idea what happened.

Update: I contacted with Norton via chat (a real person). I took at least 30 minutes to explain the full details. The agent listened, I gave screenshots, info etc. He/She promised to escalate the issue to the developer team. But he/she assured me confidently that blue info notifications are normal in this case.

@BARIS_AKALIN On your internet adapter ( WiFi or ethernet ), disable using NETBIOS over TCP in its settings. Reboot and clear your Norton history. Recheck in a few minute for the UDP 17 logging to not reoccur.

Configure the DHCP client to enable the DHCP server to determine NetBIOS behavior

  • For Windows 7

    1. Select Start, and then select Control Panel.

    2. Under Network and Internet, select View network status and tasks.

    3. Select Change adapter settings.

    4. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.

    5. In the This connection uses the following items list, double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), select Advanced, and then select the WINS tab.

    6. Select Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server, and then select OK three times.

  • For Windows 10 and windows 11

    1. Select Start, and then input View Network Connections

    2. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then select Properties.

    3. In the This connection uses the following items list, double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), select Advanced, and then select the WINS tab.

    4. Select Use NetBIOS setting from the DHCP server, and then select OK three times.

Thank you for the feedback. I read all the forum topic, thank you. But I don’t want to change my computer. I will do it as a last resort. I don’t want to make my computer vulnarable. I want Norton dev team to resolve this issue. Is it really slowing down the computer?

My own PC’s and laptops have had this change made and are in no way vulnerable because of the change. The UDP 17 flooding is caused by bad coding in the Norton program. This was a suggestion that works but is ultimately your choice. Support has not in the past been able to correct the issue, please let us know what your outcome with support is so we can advise others.

Seems turning off Quic/Http3 scanning helped. I do not experience the issues anymore and overall web browsing is faster. Thanks for the help.

I tried that when I noticed Norton wasn’t downloading definitions, Seems like they removed the definitions downloaded number in norton,

I tried those for 64 bit and it failed, then tried to run a startup scan and saw this error related to the install failed after doing googling research.
broadcom mention of virscan.zip

I removed and reinstalled norton, but with them hiding definition download numbers, can’t tell if it is downloaded and working now.

@frugalfreak What version are you on, please refresh my memory. If you are version 24.xx or 25.7.xx, the definitions from Symantec Intelligent Updater DO NOT install on those versions. Please see my below screenshot as a reference. I’m thinking the updates for these versions are solely web cloud based is the reason. The way the new versions are structured to use those services is the most likely culprit whether its by design or something that needs to be addressed by Norton.

Log.IntelligentUpdater.txt (6.3 KB)

Here is the installation log from my machine. The required registry keys are being blocked by Norton for the Intelligent Updater installer to perform its job. I have asked for clarity on this from Norton. Hoping to have a clearer answer soon for you all.

25.8.10387 (build 25.8.10387.0

I’m not gonna switch to 22 since I’m gone shortly anyway, Going to Bit

I see. Just trying to help as always. I was just pointing out that if you are on the most current release the intelligent updater won’t install definitions for that version. I have asked Norton why that is the case either way. From what I see there are missing registry entries the IU looks for that are not present with the current Norton release. Therefore the failure to install.

Sad to see you leaving Norton to. I waited a year for things to get to the point that I can trust the product again, it paid off big time for me at least. Anything we can do to keep your around and stay the course?

@SoulAsylum Do you feel it is safe to load v25 now? I am getting a new PC and debating whether to load v22 or go to v25. I was having issues with COD BOPS6 running with v24 and fell back. Also had issues with Edge and pages never loading under v24.

For me the newest version release 25.7 was installed without any issues. I did see the UDP 17 history spamming reappear but that is easily fixed until Norton has a good grip with why IPV6 is causing it. I have a good notion its because of the high usage of OPSWAT services. I am running the latest on one machine on Windows 10 Pro. I still have to update my laptop as it already has the new Norton installed and its running latest Windows 11. I am NOT seeing anything that presses me to tell anyone not to run and install it.

Keep in mind that not everyone will have the same results because of hardware and driver differences. I might also mention that I have had ZERO issues with any of my gaming titles running them on the Steam platform and I also run/maintain a HLDM game server running OZDM with some wicked bots to keep people entertained lol. Give it a shot. Just make sure you completely remove the old version and manually remove all remaining folders named Avast, Norton, Symantec and reboot. Download the newest from your Norton account and install. I have some setup screenshots that you may want to review. PM me and we can get those to you.
