Trial Version Expired!?!? I have over 500 days left on NIS 2011!

Hello everyone:

Something strange has happened. I have a subscription to NIS 2011 good for over another 500 days. Recently, I ran my laptop stand alone without an internet connection. All of a sudden, I got a pop up "Norton's trial has expired. Please connect to the internet to reactivate your product." When I reconnected my laptop to the internet, I successfully reactivated NIS 2011, but for some reason, it still thinks I am running a trial version that has expired. Now, whenever restarting the computer, I must manually reactivate NIS. How can I get Nortons to see my subscription on start up and not think that I am running a trial version? I am on an HP Pavilion Laptop DV 5215 running on Windows XP Media Center.

Thanks in advance for any help. It will be gratefully appreciated.

Regards,

Larry

Hello CapVid

Welcome to the Norton Community Forum

Is the time correct on the laptop and the date?  Have you tried synchronizing it with the Norton Servers by clicking on Help & Support and checking subscription status? Does it show that you have your subscription in your Norton Account? Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, the time and date on my computer are accurate. I took your advice and Nortons indicates my subscription status is verified and shows 544 days left. What's my next step?

Hi CapVid,

Check out this post - http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20100917172028EN&ln=en_US

Let me know if this helps!

Thanks for that, Tim. I will try running the removal tool and see if that solves the issue.

UPDATE:

My HP Pavilion laptop is having thermal sensor shut off issues after installing a new fan assembly, so while that is being dealt with, I am on my ten year old IBM T22 notebook running WIndows 2000. I know that my Norton's subscription allows for 3 computers to be protected, so my question now is, how do I use my current subscription to download and install NIS on this computer? Is there still a version that will run on WIndows 2000?

I do have a Nortons account set-up and I remember my password, but I can't seem to remember what my user name is registered as there. Could a moderator please PM me with that information? I'm assuming I'm going to need to proceed through that account. Thanks very much for any assistance.

From what I can tell no version of Norton supports 2000 any more. Regarding the Norton account, the email address is your user name. So try guessing the email address used.

Please talk to customer service chat to properly identify your account.  Our Mderators are not directly connected to the various parts of Symantec, and would not have the necessary information to appropriately identify your account.

HI CapVid,

The most recent version of NIS which supports Windows 2000 is NIS 2006. I don't know of any active links for this version any more, in fact the oldest version of NIS I am able to access from the download center is 2009.

Is this Windows 2000 notebook something you normally use? I might be able to check with Symantec to see if there is a 2006 version of NIS which can be downloaded. NIS 2006 and later versions are eligible for free upgrade to the latest 2011 version so this would imply that if we could get you a copy of 2006 that your current product key should work on it, provided that you still have activations remaining out of your 3 user license.

I did find the following support article on NIS 2006 but it won't help since all it does is reference a previous version of NIS 2006 which you either downloaded or purchased a CD of.

I'll let you know if I am able to find a link for NIS 2006.

Best wishes.

Allen

I think the 2005 version was the last one that worked with Win 2000.  Hopefully we can get some confirmation that 2006 will work, as that might solve some problems with the activation of an older version.

If necessary to protect the laptop, the user could try Nod32 4.2 as it lists 2000 in its minimum requirements, although there could be an issue with disc space.  I would be very reluctant to irritate old drivers with new software, as it could very well blue screen.

Hi AlienM:

Thanks for that information. I keep this Thinkpad regularly up to date to function as an emergency back up, and I only use it for that purpose, so I currently have AVG and Zone Alarm free versions on it, but Z significantly slows down my web activities, and I figured that as long as I had a license for 3 machines, I might as well dump those and load Nortons, but I half suspected that the W2000 OS wouldn't be supported anymore. But like you say, if Nortons 2006 can be acquired within my current license, I would definitely be interested.

In the meantime, a bit OT but, this problem with my HP Pavilion laptop is maddening. The long and short of it is the fan assembly was dying, I had to run an external fan on it from the rear so it would not thermal shut off. Then, after replacing the dying fan with a new fan assembly (genuine HP replacement for the exact model), I can hear the fan ramping up and down in speed, yet thermal shut down still occurs. I can boot it up, let it sit in an idea mode and it will run continuously. Within 5 minutes of actually attempting to do something, it will shutdown. If anybody has any thoughts or theories to offer regarding this issue, I'd be very grateful. And thanks to everyone who has responded as well.

Hi Delph,

According to the information on Amazaon, NIS 2006 lists Windows 2000 as supported. This also jives with my recollection.

I have asked Symantec if there is a direct link for 2006 and also whether a 2011 product key can be used to activate an older version. I know if you go forward from 2006 to 2011 the same product key will work to activate 2011 but I'm not sure if it works the same going backwards in versions so I'm asking for clarification on that as well.

Best wishes.

Allen

This also jives with my recollection.

You are good.  I can't remember back to last week.  :smileyvery-happy:

I have my moments. Sometimes I can't remember what I had for lunch that same day! :smileytongue:

Well, possibly just a bit of an exaggeration. :smileytongue:

On checking further, we need to find out from the user what service pack level is on the old laptop.  2006 requires service pack 3.  Also we might need to know if it is Home or Pro version.  2006 apparently works with both.  2005 specifies Pro, but service pack 1.  It is going to be one of those days......or nights.

Here are my system specs for my back up computer:

IBM Thinkpad T-22

Windows 2000 Professional version 5.0 (2195) Service Pack 4.0

Ram 255 MB  CPU Speed 896 MHz

Number of Processors  =  1

Thanks to everyone for their help so far. I really appreciate it. I'm going to cross post the HP thermal shutdown issue on the HP Forum, assuming there is one.

Hello

The only thing I  could find is this

This is where I found it as well. I was hoping to be able to get a direct link from Symantec for the 2006 version. I also don't know for sure if the product key from a new version will work on an older version.

Does that mean that it won't run on this Thinkpad which has service pack 4?

HI CapVid,

This should not be a problem. When requirements are listed like that it means that SP 3 is the minimum. You can double check the other system requirements from Amazon.

Best wishes.
