For academic curiosity, I saved a few of the recent spammed .zip files to my hard disk, knowing they were some form of malware/virus/trojan, to see what Norton had to say about them.
I manually scanned them with Norton AV. Results = nothing found.
I then unzippd the files and scanned the "Invoice_03212014.exe" manually. Results = nothing found.
I duplicated the steps with Malwarebytes Free versoin and it found in the .zip, and the unzipped files "Trojan.Downloader.Upatre" and was very cooperative in sandboxing/removing the files. Online scanners found it too.
As a Norton subscriber for years, this scenario is less than satifactory in conveying the impression of protection I had thought I was paying for. What can adequately explain this oversight?

Welcome, You have proven that no single security program can protect you 100% of the time from 100% of the thousands of threats released daily. It is not a matter of oversight. It is a matter of focus. Symantec / Norton has limited resources which it keeps focused on the types of threats which can destroy data.
Some of the lesser PITA malware gets past the guard and you have to call in the reinforcements. I keep two on demand free scanners current on my desktop for just such times. I run either, and sometimes both, weekly to be sure that nothing has slipped in and remains undetected. Should my efforts fail I go to one of the free specialized malware removal sites and ask for help. Their trained volunteer staff do great work and I trust them when they tell me my system is clean.

If you don't mind me asking, what on-demand free scanners do you currently use? I'm assuming you also use Malwarebytes® - Free like I do (correct me if I'm wrong), but what is the 2nd?
Reason I ask is, I'm trying to troubleshoot my own problems with NAV (I'm sure you've seen my discussion thread), and one possible proposed cause of my NAV malfunctioning on 2 different PCs might be my use of an on-demand free scanner (namely Spybot S&D) on both units.
Thanks in advance.
