Trojan.FakeAV virus in Windows XP

Dear Forum Member,

I am having problems getting rid of this virus.

I went into Windows XP Safe Mode, and did a full computer scan.

I got the message at the end of the scan:

"You have not eliminated all threats. There are still 1 infection(s) remaining. It has identified the affected file as in C:\Documents and Settings\Conor\Local Settings\Temp\expand32xp.dll .

Also, I am unable to connect to the Internet - I am writing this from a friend's computer.

I use Norton Anti-Virus 2004 but have been updating it and re-subscribing every year and recently paid to keep it up to date.

When I clicked on LiveUpdate within Norton, instead of getting a message like 'no internet connection' I got a message 'Norton Anti-Virus encountered internal program error. Uninstall and Re-install LiveUpdate'. I also got a message 'LU1803: LiveUpdate failed while getting your updates' .

Also when I clicked on Quarantine, I got the message 'Quarantine Console has encountered a problem and needs to close'

I am clearly not out of the woods yet! Could you suggest what I should try next?

Best Regards,

Conor Joyce
