Trojan or other malware in .jpeg file?

Good time of the day forum users,

I am concerned as my computer was hacked before. Now I have a new one, and using it very carefully.

However, when I used Skype, I received 2 pictures from the person who I barely know. I scanned each picture, and results were negative.

Though I concerned about it still

When Norton Scans it, it shows that it scanned 2 files, and 1 file was skipped.

My question is, why its 2 files in a single jpeg file ? Could that be some malware?

Also, how reliable Norton Internet Security in finding threats? I got a paid version, but still.

I thank you very much for your answers.

Regards

I think it may have to do with your settings and whether or not you have it set to check hidden files. Someone with more knowledge than I have will hopefully correct me if I’m wrong, but I’ve downloaded JPEGS and have them scan as 2 files.

" but I've downloaded JPEGS and have them scan as 2 files"

It's the Metadata embedded inside the file.

Same thing for manyTIFF's, and RAW DSLR files, .CR2 or .NEF files etc..

Thats interesting, I have found some jpeg's that do indeed scan as 2 files.

But I'm not sure if it is the metadata because I have some with metadata that still scan as one.

Maybe it's a coincidence but every image I have that were taken with an iPhone scans as 2 files while images taken with a blackberry that contain metadata scan as one.

Dave

Thank you for your all contributions.

Indeed, Dave, as I scan iPhone images it is 2 files. But others are one.

How reliable NIS in finding trojan viruses? And also how I can make sure no one can see my screen remotely?

Thank you again

Hi,
What the previous post authors said are right.
Just a FYI: But there are ways to embed files with in pics with simple DOS commands.
.
If you are too suspecious, check the file size. If that file size is big enough to doubt it, you can try opening it with an uncompressing utility like winrar and see if that pic file has been embedded.

Hi,

I do not think it has something to do with the size.

I shoot in RAW format and each file has 23.4 MBs of size.

If I scan with NIS it scans 2 files.

If I delete the metadata with Photoshop and then save as Jpeg, quality 12, or Bitmap, the jpeg file is scanned as 1 file by NIS.

So I believe that somehow the metadata factor is involved.

Double post, sorry.

Hi Apostolos,
The first line of my post says, what other post authors (including you) said is right.
But as I continued, there can be chances of embedding files inside jpeg file. So I gave the suggestion to try unzipping it.

Hi,

I understand what you are saying, but in order to unzip a jpeg file it has first to be zipped.

You can have a jpeg file with metadata included, but unzipped, so how do you unzip that one?

I may be wrong but I do not think that it can be done.

Hi again,
That was a trick we used to include on different simple hacking contests.
Visiting the below links will explain how to hide files using tricks and commands, retrieve it later.

Hi,

This is what I'm saying, the image has to be compressed and another file has to be embedded.

I'm talking about single jpeg files so it's different.

Hello

You can always send the picture I beliieve to Virus Total to see if it is malware.
