Trying to share Printer on Vista

There you go again.

Between us we know a lot about a lot of things, but your issue is particular to you.

Call Linksys.  You will be talking to a live person on the phone and he or she will walk you through this as though it was an initial installation.  Be nice to them and they will be nice to you.  :smileywink:

Try that and let us know what happens.

Good luck,

I was going thru the router settings and I came across Setup tab. One of the sub tabs is titled DDNS.  It right now is selected as disabled. Is this NORMAL?

There are 2 options besides "Disabled"

1) DynDNS.org

2) TZO.com

I tried researching it and it seems like something that should/could be enabled for networking.

Also on the main Basic Setup tab I noticed these settings.

!) Internet Connection Type: Automatic Configuration: DHCP

2) DHCP Server: Enabled

Should I look into any of that before I call?

Ck,

DynDNS.org and TZO.com are used to assign a host and domain name to your router that will always be the same even though your IP address changes.   It doesn't come into play for your issues.

The other two settings are standard and what they do is allow your router to set up the IP address for each device connected to the router.  That is where the 192.168.1.101 and 102 came from.   And again that will not have any bearing on what you are experiencing.

I want to thank you for at least explaining those things to me.

Do you think Windows Defender might be an issue?  I'm pretty sure I turned it off on the desktop but I'm not a 100% sure for the laptop. I think I remember reading somewhere that that can also impact network connections.

Anyways I'm gonna go home and try 1 more thing and if it doesn't work I'll call Linksys.

And just so people can see that I’m not lying about having the correct settings for Windows Vista here is where I’m getting my information from… http://www.home-network-help.com/vista-printer-sharing.html http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx#EBAA http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/e2e03106-2546-4085-bd07-6c3ac95003111033.mspx

I don't think you're lying about the Vista settings as the Network and Sharing Center interface is quite straightforward.

I think your issue is with the router.  Have you spoken to Linksys yet?

No.

There's someone on cNet who thinks that IPv6 may be the reason that they're not seeing each other.

However like I told you and them I've NEVER messed with any of those things.  So I don't see how it would impact Printer Sharing now when it didn't do anything back then!?

Call Linksys.

Do what they tell you.

Cass,

Have you called Linksys yet?  Did they help?

The rest of the story.

Last post is telling.  Actually, so are all of them.

Glad to hear it has nothing to do with Norton.

Cass' long journey

Okay so a while back I had an issue getting Printer Sharing setup thru Vista while running NIS 2008 on the computer. Eventually I got it solved.

However now that we're using NIS 2009 on this computer I am lost as to what's going on.  Right now both computers are set to Private Network on the Vista Network and Sharig Center.

Printer Sharing is turned ON on both computers. Network Discovery is ON for both computers.

Yet the desktop does not recognize the laptop that's connected to the SAME wireless router (Linksys WRT610N) and the laptop does not recognize the desktop when I click on  "view full map" or go under Start and then click on "Network"

BOTH systems are recognizing the 360 which is connected wired to the router....

Also to be clear the WorkGroup for both systems is "WORKGROUP"

The laptop's computer name is "JSimpson-PC" and the desktop's name is "SIMPSONFAMILY-PC".

As for NIS 2009 I tried changing the network trust level to FULL Trust and that didn't change anything...so I don't know what else to do or what's going on.

Cassiline,

We don't need all this information about workgroup name or computer name; and giving it out does make your computer more vulnerable.  You should never provide it unless you are solicited to do so by someone you trust.
