I want to download IE9. Windows 7 (64-bit Home) said I needed to download a bunch of updates prior to downloading IE9. I attempted to download the updates and was unsuccessful.
According to Windows 7, one possible reason why the download of updates was unsuccessful was because my computer was using a Windows firewall.
I figured I'd have to disable NIS as well, so I reluctantly right-clicked on Disable Anti-Virus Auto Protect andretriedthedownloadofupdates. IgotthesamemessageofusingaWindowsfirewall.

I just tried to download Windows updates (74 in all). It seeems like one update downloaded OK, but was unsuccesssful when trying to update. I even turned off virus auto protect from NIS.
Windows message: Some updates were not installed. Failed 74 updates. Error(s) found: code: 800700003. Windows update encountered an unknown error. Then I clicked on the "get help with this error" link.
I got a help window: Best results for Windows_Update_800700003
these links:
1, Update drivers recommended links.
2. Turn Windows firewall on or off
3. Updating your computer
4. Startup repair: frequently asked questions
5. Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly
6. Toubleshoot problems with installing updates
7. Disable anti-virus software
8. How do I run an application once with a full administrator access token?
I've investigated the first link. Drivers are being downloaded automatically.
I'm assuming since numbers 2 and 7 deal with turning off (and on) anti-virus software, that needs to be done..
I want to thank you for your heads up about Microsoft not needing a disconnect of firewall(s) to download updates.
I examined the list of links in the Microsoft error window more closely.
I clicked on the update installer troubleshooter link (I didn't know it was provided by Microsoft) and ran it. The troubleshooter found and corrected 2 problems. I'm downloading the updates now. I'm about half way through.
This doesn't look to be a Norton problem, so I will mark this thread answered.
