Two-Factor Authentication for Multiple Users Fails

Infrequently, after either a Norton or Microsoft O/S update, 360 or NUU will hiccup and fail to work.  A reinstall is the usual fix.

In the past, I've used 2FA for my Norton acct, and for my PCs, it works well.  However, if the problem occurs on my wife's machine, and I'm not at home, she's unable to access the account because Norton allows only the primary account holder's phone number to be stored.  So the request for a 2FA response from Norton is sent to my phone, not hers.

After chatting with Norton Supports many months ago, and being told there was no way around it, I opted to disable 2FA.  That cured her problem.

More and more news is now being published about the benefits of 2FA, and if possible, I'd like to re-enable it with Norton - or find another option that does not include a physical USB security key (expense, inconvenience, multiples required if one's lost, etc.).

So, the "solution" I'm asking about is, is Norton now allowing multiple phone numbers for an account (as some financial companies do), or some other method to allow spouses to access an account?

Glad I could help.

Something everyone needs to realize is that when setting up a 2FA for any account, always set up backup methods using different devices. If you somehow no longer have access to the device that provides the 2FA, you are locked out of your account and there is no way to recover access.

I have set up an authenticator app, SMS to my mobile, and voice message to my home phone.

I went through the steps of your suggestion and all appears to be good.  2FA is now set up using MS Authenticator for me and SMS text messaging for her.  I'll make it a point to walk her through the steps needed to have the code sent to her phone.

Thanks.

I'm using MS Authenticator as the primary method for my access (just now re-enabled 2FA) but am not familiar with how to go about using your suggestion.

With due respect, it sounds like a cumbersome way to go - printing or saving those codes - since we don't often have the problem of her not being able to access the account.

Using "Peterweb's" suggestion, I've set up 2FA with Authenticator for me and SMS text message for her.

Thanks for your efforts.

I just tested and was able to set up two different mobile phones for 2FA for my Norton Account.

From your Norton Account Settings, in the 2FA section, click on +Add a new method. On the next page choose Mobile phone number. Add your wife's mobile number. Enter the code sent to her phone and you now have both phones set up for 2FA.

Next time she goes to log into your Norton Account, after entering your email and Norton Account password, in the 2FA screen click on Choose another method. Then click on her phone number and the code will be sent to her phone.

However, if the problem occurs on my wife's machine, and I'm not at home, she's unable to access the account because Norton allows only the primary account holder's phone number to be stored.

save/print single-use backup codes for you &or your wife.
mobile phone number & 10 single-use backup codes.  Just remember to get new codes after using n codes.
