Two Firewall Questions

Some of you might have already helped me with similar questions that I have asked before in the past concerning firewalls, and I thank you for that, but I have another interesting question, and another question that I would like answered.

Premise: I am going to be asking about the 2007 Norton Internet Security firewall. I understand that there is a new version, and I already have it, but I'm trying to figure out how secure my computer was during 2010 when I used this version. Now; when a trojan slips through and gets on your computer, I know that the firewall is supposed to block it from communicating with another computer, but...

1st Question: How reliable is the firewall? I mean; if the firewall is updated, is it a pretty good bet that nothing's going to get past it, or is there a good degree of error? I've been worried about the trojans that come from the various tool kits.

2nd Question: If the trojan gets past the firewall and communicates with another computer, does MY computer's firewall have another chance to block any communication going back to my computer form theirs? Or is it that once the trojan establishes communication; that's it?

Thanks for any answers or thoughts.
