Unable to access local area network with VPN on since v4.0

Hello, since the recent revamp of the android VPN’s where protocol selection was introduced, I’m no longer able to access my local area network while the VPN is activated.

Split tunnelling is not a viable solution as I want to be able to copy files from the internet, to my local NAS. I’ve confirmed this behavior on several devices, several android versions and using wireguard, mimic and openvpn. I’ve also confirmed that I do not have the “block connections without vpn” option enabled in Android system settings.

The latest app version where LAN access worked allowed was 3.8.0.16427.

Please escalate the issue and reinstate the functionality we previously had.

Thanks for the suggestion and link, unfortunately, the issue affects many use cases, one of them being downloading from the internet directly to my NAS. However, in general, it’s also just very inconvenient if I want a VPN on for whatever reason, but also want/need to access my local network. Nearly every VPN provider provides a toggle to allow LAN access if the VPN blocks it by default.

It used to work in previous app versions which I can roll back to, but I really like that the ability to choose your protocol has been added. Since wireguard is able to be multi threaded, it provides a significant boost in performance for multi-core lower end devices.

Not a solution. But if your local network is properly secured with a strong Wifi password, a VPN is not really needed. Depending on what you are trying to do with your network connection, you may not need a VPN when using a properly secured home network.   Here is a good Norton Blog article on the question.   https://us.norton.com/blog/privacy/do-you-need-a-vpn-at-home

In your case, are you trying to download internet files directly to the NAS, or are you downloading them to your device and then transferring them to the NAS?

Hello, thank you for the response, I’ve tried it on a Pixel 5 running android 14, OnePlus Pad (android 14) and a Pixel 3a XL (android 12).

You note the new version allows you to choose the protocol you want to use. Are you using the Automatic setting, or have you chosen a specific one? Try changing protocols to see if that makes any difference to your connection.

Sorry. Just reread your post and see you have already tried this.  I would suggest contacting Norton Support and seeing if they have any  suggestions.

I will also escalate this thread to get it sent to the appropriate team.

Please post the devices and the Android versions on the devices seeing this issue.
