My DSL provider is Centurylink, they provide NIS subscription. I've had trouble with my laptop which had NIS running fine, until I had to reload the OS. I actually reloaded the OS 3 times. (I was trying to downgrade to XP from win7 due to a program compatibility, ended up staying on win7.)
Using the Centurylink Installer, I am able to install NIS and then I receive the dialog box to activate. After being re-directed to the Norton activation site and entering my system name I get the following error:
All support links return me to Centurylink, whose customer support tell me it is a Norton server problem. Now I have run out of time to activate and my NIS has stopped working.
I have uninstalled and re-installed both NIS and the Centurylink Installer and have gone through all the troubleshooting pages with no change in the response. Any help in getting past this Error 111?
As you have an ISP version of Norton, are you sure it is not Norton Security Suite (NSS)? This is usually what is offered by the ISP.
As to the activation issue, I would suggest contacting Norton Support via online chat. If it is in fact a Norton activation issue they will be able to help. You will find them at www.norton.com/chat
Thanks peterweb, I will try the Norton chat. It is definitely NIS, when Qwest was assimilated by Centurylink they switched from McAfee to the NIS (which I like much better). I'll post if I can find a solution.

Hi, As a backup;
If Centurylink provided the software they should also provide the key. If you had McAfee installed and didn't fully uninstall it your Norton product may not install correctly
CL uses their own installer to install the Norton, then Norton says it needs to be activated and brings up a page to put in my computer name. When I submit this I get the 111 error. CL doesn't provide any key at all, it is all automated through their "installer".
Oh, this is a clean install of Win7 so I shouldn't have any trace of McAfee.
I'm in queue now for chat, we'll see what they say!
I have been having this problem on 3 different computers for the past 2 months. I updated an operating system and bought a new computer. (I uninstalled Norton first) Then I updated the Norton AV to the latest version through the Centurylink installer and have been getting that Error 111 Misc activation error ever since..Norton chat took control of my computer and tried the install for themselves - same problem. So they said it was their problem and should be fixed in 30 days and gave me trial version of Norton 360 to use. 30 days passed - still doesnt work and now Norton says the problem is fixed and it Centurylinks problerm. So I'm waiting on a fix from them. I believe some software counter somewhere thinks I have too many activations. I know in the past, I've had activation issues for this very reason. But back then a window would open allowing one to deauthorize unused PCs. That never happens now, I've been using trial versions for the past 60 days! I would think someone knows how to fix this!!!
tell them you are with qwest-or centurylink—and tell them it is showing your “seats” are all in use
tell them you uninstalled and reinstalled Norton and were not given a prompt to uninstall the seats—
and you only have 5 computers
hope this works
if not let us know
So as I said. this turned into a dead end and I was referred back to Centurylink. they did respond with an "escalation" email and
that response was to use the Norton Removal Tool and install with a direct download link instead of the Centurylink installer.
That was tried during the first chat with Centurylink, but to humor them I did it again. Same results as with the installer. Installation completes normally, automatic activation popup comes up, I click activate, a website opens with a window showing my computer name as device name (I tried changing it - doesnt matter what you put in), I click activate - "error 111 Misc Activation error"
No opportunity to deactivate unused pcs, just the error 111 screen shown in the post above.
I sent the results to Centurylink Thursday. No response yet. I have 3 pcs and a laptop - the laptop actually has an working activated Norton Online from Centurylink. The others did also until I used the CL installer to update the Norton Online to the latest version. I think I did the laptop first. The sequence I described happens with all three pcs. One has Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, one is Windows 7 Home 32 bit, and one is Windows XP SP 3. The laptop is Windows t Home 64 bit. Well, I could on and on, but I'm just venting now. Someone must know how to reset/deauthorize pcs if indeed that is the problem.
I supposed to have 5 licenses, but its acting like I have 1.
Have you tried the Norton Chat again? If Norton does control the activations, they should be able to free up unused activations.
If Century Link controls the activations, you will have to try their chat again.
We are mostly voluteers here, except the names in red that are Norton employees. We only pass on our experiences with the Norton products. If an activation server is denying you, it has to be determined who has control of that.
NSS is only offered by Comcast, other ISP's offer Norton Online products, NAV, NIS N360 Online, etc... CenturyLink users should contact CenturyLink support, who in turn may refer users to Norton support through Norton\CenturyLink web escalation portal. The Norton\CenturyLink web escalation portal will refer CTL users to phone and chat queues staffed by agents famaliar with CTL products and support processes...
