Unable to activate my Wife's computer

Hi,

I recently purchased a 3 lic pack.  For one reason or another, the software I downloaded on my wife's computer will not accept the lic number I received in my e-mail.  When I look at the lic. manager in my account, it also appears that I only have one activation left when I should have two, because it also seems to have applied to a computer that I have not owned for months--I did uninstall norton, but the computer was off line when I did it--in fact, I have owned several packs of norton, but, disposed of a total of five computers from my business--I really have no way of knowing which computer it was on.

I am getting tired of installing uninstalling--what I really want is a clean slate, and to be able to put the three licenses on the computers that I own and use.  By everything I read on the sites it seems like it should be easy, but, for one reason or another it is not.  Is there any way to get there from here?  I do not feel like spending another fifty bucks on this.  Hoping someone out there can help.

Hi mountainp:

Was there any other security software on your wife's machine?  If you installed NIS 2011 over top of some other software, even another expired Norton product, there will be problems.

A new activation should not show as having 2 licences used provided you were careful to remove Norton from all of the machines that were disposed of.  If you did not, the new owner might still be able to renew their copy by clicking check subscription status.

Are you certain that the product you downloaded exactly matches the product that you bought.  For instance, there are two separate versions of N360 but the keys are not interchangeable.

Let us know what product you bought.

Mountainp,

Adding to dlephinium's explanations of how things can happen, I would just reassure you that there will be no problem in sorting out the number of activations so that they match reality -- just contact Norton's Customer Support on line as below:

To contact customer support Click on this link and work on from there.

You can choose CHAT or Email; email or phone may have a long wait time and feedback from users tells us that CHAT is by far the best at resolving problems.

Note that that link is to the USA/CAN website so if you are located elsewhere I'm sure you will be able to find the equivalent location on your local Symantec website; some pages have a link at the top right where you can select the country you are located in.

You may find that it is the simplest way to sort out why the key you bought will not activate your wife's installations if none of delphinium's suggestions pin it down.

Please let us know how yhou get on and if you need any more specific help.

I did uninstall all security from her computer.  I suppose I could try it again--it just won't accept the key when I enter it.  Hmmmmmmm.

Thanks for the chat link.

What was the security system on your wife's computer? How did you uninstall it?

Simple Windows Remove Program is not enough -- all security programs dig deep into the system to protect it and need a special tool to remove fully enough not to interfere when changing security systems. The major security system people including Norton have such tools and someone here can point you to the correct one if you say what was installed.
