Unable to browse with Internet Explorer 7 after installing NIS 2009

I am having a similar problem and none of the Norton techs have been able to help me. I have Windows XP.

I have used NIS for years. Then I stupidly decided to upgrade to Norton 360 which kept locking up, got some great advise on these boards about that, and so I exchanged it to go back to NIS except I got the 2009 instead of the 2008 I had.

Shortly after installation I was no longer able to use Internet Explorer and kept getting the message that the page could not be displayed but I was definitely online as I was able to send & receive email.

To shorten the story - numerous techs un-installed and re-installed the software, removed software they felt might interfere with NIS 2009 with my permission, has me contact my ISP to reaffirm everything was working properly, did full system scans,  un-installed & re-installed IE 7 to no avail.

Luckily I had one of the techs download the Mozilla browser for me before one of the re-boots so I can at least still get online with that software. The most perplexing thing is that I CAN use the IE7 browser on this computer if I log on as a guest or under another name but not my profile!!!!!!!!!

I am at my wits end. I just read about some Malware on these boards or trojans. Could this be my problem and what should I do?? I still have an open case with Symantec so I would think they would have advised me if it were one of these issues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly, can everyone check what Version of N.I.S. 2009 they have.  If it is 16.1.0.33 and it was related to Anti-Phishing, then please Turn On Anti-Phishing for a few hours and see if the problem returns because this was Fixed in 16.1.0.33.

Secondly, if anyone is worried they may have Maware that Norton is not picking up - which does happen - I would suggest Downloading and Installing these free online Scanner which will not interfer with Norton's Firewall and please do a Full Scan in Safe Mode of all Drives:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html.

SUPERAntiSpyware: http://www.download.com/SUPERAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-187228.html?tag=mncol&cdlPid=559816.

Starting your Computer in Safe Mode: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam.

Please let us know the Scan Results.

sltoo123,

Thank you for pointing out that you have issues with multiple profiles.

We don't seem to have the same problem though, I have no problem whatsoever loading pages.

The problem is with running nis 2009 on my computer that acts as a file server to 2 other computers.  Their running nis 2009 by themselves shows no issues, at least no issues that I am aware of.  The problem was (on version .25) that if I installed 2009 on my own computer on which I have their favorites links stored, it freezes IE 7 as described in my first post.  When freezed, a reboot does not put them back on their feet, I have to reboot my computer also.

I don't know if version .33 solved the issue, I would be surprised if it did because nobody from Norton seems to be aware or acknowledge they have an issue.  Codydog also have an issue with IE 7 and eventhough he posted the crash data file, they haven't come up with results.

In the meantime, I am staying with nis 2007 until I see a resolution.

Romi

Thanks for all the info you provided as well as to everyone else who posted on this topic.

I do have version 16.1.0.33.

I have turned off the phishing as you have suggested and I will check back in a few hours.

I am also going to download the scanners to see if they help.

Like I wrote before the most perplexing thing is that on the same computer I can use IE7 if I log in as a guest but not as myself which makes no sense whatsoever. I am but on a Network and I am directly wired into the cable modem.

Anyway, I'll let you know if it works out.

All of this stuff is a tad above my head and skill levels on the computer but if I don't try I will never learn.

Are you able to use Internet explorer after disabling the Smart firewall feature in the 2009 version?

You said, Norton techs uninstalled and reinstalled the Norton product to resolve the issue, were you able to access internet explorer after uninstalling the Norton product?

If disabling Smart firewall does not resolve the issue, can you start disabling individual features in 2009 version and let us know which feature blocks you accessing Internet explorer.

Well, I have a likely solution.

Create a new user called Transfer (or any other available name).  Make sure everything works with Transfer that you personally want You may have to reinstall some things, but that is unlikely; the main thing is that as far as some programs are concerned, you will have to migrate over favorite palces, email or various settings (you can use Windows migration tool or -- I think this is better -- you can use the export/import properties of either Outlook Express or MS Outlook, if you use either of those programs).

Now, check Transfer and find out if it still works.  If it doesn't, you have learned that something you migrated over is the source of your problems.  If Transfer is still in good operating condition, delete the no longer functioning User completely (make sure you do not say to save settings).

You should also run a registry cleaner (like NSW's WinDoctor) to clean out any left-over stuff pointing to the original user.

At this point, you have two options, you can

1.  rename Transfer to your original User name

     a.  Advantage:  quick and painless

     b.  Disadvantage:  the user name under documents and settings stays Transfer; only the log-in name changes

2. or you can create a new user with the same name as the one you deleted.

     a.  Advantage:  You now have your original name restored, but in working order

     b.  Disadvantage:  repeating the same process you just did before

Vineeth -

I have just turned off the firewall, the identity safe and the phisihng filters.........at least I think I did it correctly as some of this is just above my head and it still does not work. I am going to try to do each one individually too and see if that helps but my hopes are low. I will let you know

Downloaded and did all the scans you posted - they both removed some adware - mostly it was "my web search" files and still no solution. I am going to try some of the other things now being suggested.

I will try what you suggested, if I can figure out how to do it all. I did one experiment the other day where I tried it import my favorites to the guest user profile, which is able to use IE7, but certain things I cannot do unless I make the guest the administrator and I am afraid I will really screw everything up.

Also, I have so many icons on my desktop I don't know how I will ever get it all the same as my current profile...........

The other thing I did a long time ago was to set the computer so that all those programs do not run in the background on startup so I'd have to see which ones are and try to narrow it down. I amy have to try to do this when I have a lot of time and not in the evening when I get so drawn in I can't stop and go to sleep.

If anything works I will let everyone know. Thanks so much to all

One thing to try before getting too complicated is to RESET your copy of IE7.

Menu bar: Tools / Internet Options / Advanced TAB > [Reset] button.

Read what it says it does -- all of this may be nothing to do with NIS2009 especially since IE7 is OK with the other users.

Mijcar has a very good suggestion which often clears up problems when not all users have the same experience.

But try my RESET IE7 first -- it's a lot easier!

Hi huwyngr-

The techs did it several times on the un-stalls - re-installs of the software and I did it myself too but it did not work..........:(

Does anybody think I should try and download IE 8 as a possibloe solution??

sltoo213 wrote:

No.  It's in beta; and if it doesn't work,

a.  you won't be able to get the support you need from Symantec; and

b.  MS warns you that you might not get the help you need uninstalling beta products (usually, it's only from forum members); and

c.  If this is your only or main computer, you might lose important functionality while you're in the beta stages.  Visit the MS beta site and read what it says about beta testing - you must be prepared and willing to lose any computer functionality during beta testing.

On the other hand ... if you're really feeling adventurous and can survive a total system breakdown, well ...

This is part of the Network Diagnostic that I get when I try to connect to IE7 but I don't understand what this means. Maybe you do??

I went into my MSN Messenger account and went in to options>connections>internet explorer connection settings. I did the test under TCP and it says I am connected. Then I tried to do the same in the HTTP proxy server and port and it said: Unable to connect (80072efd)and I don't understand this stuff either but I remember seeing the HTTP reference in the diagnostic.

I am trying to look at alll the stuff I can without screwing everything up worse. Any clues??

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage   Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage     Most likely causes:
  • You are not connected to the Internet.
  • The website is encountering problems.
  • There might be a typing error in the address.

Oh well – one more thing eliminated … <s>

YIPPEE HOORAY!!!! :smileyvery-happy:

MY IE7 IS FINALLY BACK IN MY PROFILE!!! :smileyvery-happy:

Vineeth -

I started all over again and rebooted and then one at a time disabled different features, restarted the computer and then tried to open IE7 and the culprit is the..............Antiphising.

Now here is the weird thing - why did it only affect my profile on this computer and nit the other ones?

I am very happy it is working but I also don't understand why the techs that helped me for hours on end did not just think to do this step and save me days of aggravation? They did try to disable the firewall which did not work but no the antiphishing.:smileymad:

I just hope this info helps someone else solve their issue.

THANKS TO ALL WHO GAVE ME INPUT AND SUGGESTIONS AND SHARED THEIR KNOWLEDGE.

 I REALLY APPRECIATE IT.

Which antiphishing?  The IE7 antiphishing or the Norton antiphishing?  I am wondering if both were somehow on at the same time and there was a conflict.

Congratulations!  Smart thinking, sltoo.

Sorry - you are correct I should have been more specific but I am a novice at all this stuff - including posting on the web.

My IE7 phishing was always off so I turned off the Norton, after I finally found out where to turn it off, and a miracle happened!!!

I am thinking I should never turn it back on - unless there is some kind of a update to correct what must be a program glitch.

What do you think?

Do you think I should turn on the IE7 antiphishing for safety purposes??

Good questions, sltoo.

When something like this happens to me with Toggle Switch programs (click once, it's on, click again, it's off), I like to turn both off; then turn one on and the other off; then the first off and the second on; and then finally end up with the configuration I prefer.  Usually, but not always, this helps get things back on track.  In this case, I'd prefer to have the Norton Antiphishing on and the IE Antiphishing off; but that's mere personal opinion.

Please let me know what you ultimately do and decide.  I think we'd all be interested in the results.
