I have endeavoured in vain, for the past two days to complete the Live Update of my Norton Internet Suite 2011 on my Windows PC.
Is there a secure Norton site, where I can go and by using my Download Manager, download the 70Mb update, a site that includes 'resume download' support for download managers. This is because my ISP limits my online usage to 5 hours.
Therefore, if my time-limit runs-out, I will be able to resume the download at a later day.
I am not in contact with anyone who has a broadband connection. I am in dire straits and hope that you can provide me with a solution, either here on at my private email in your database. Thank you.
Are these the correct files I ought to download for my Windows 2000 XP Norton Internet Security 2011 update, using my download manager?
The three files add-up to some 300Mb (!), whereas when I run Live Update and it repeatedly fails to download today's', Friday 20 May 2011, update is around 70Mb.
You just need one of those files and you need to pick the one that corresponds to your product and operating system. For Norton Internet Security 2011 running on Windows XP, you would just need to download the 20110519-020-v5i32.exe file. However, the file is nearly 100 MB, so I'm not sure this is a viable solution for your dial-up issue.
No apologies necessary - it happens all the time. I wish I had a good answer for you about staying updated. Just a few years ago virus definitions where released weekly and were of a size easily managed with dialup. Today there are hundreds, and even thousands of definitions released daily, and life for dialup users is becoming more difficult as more applications, not just AV, become dependent on broadband. I feel your pain.
Thank you very much for your generous and abundant and informative assistance in resolving what has become for dial-up users (remember the days when dinosaurs walked the Earth and dial-up was all the rage back then?).
So if I do understand you correctly, I will have to make downloads via Norton's site, using my donwload manager.
I am not sure what the best way would be for you to download updates, but if manually downloading using a download manager works best for you, you might stay with it. You still need to run LiveUpdate to get IPS definitions, etc,, so you ought to do that immediately after updating your virus defs to prevent LiveUpdate from pulling them (it should see that you are current). If you are using Windows XP and NIS 2011, I believe the file will always end in v5i32, but you should double check that with the list provided with each download link. You can check for the most recent version using the RSS feed here (you want the Multiple Daily Updates listing):
SendofJive, Words are inadequate to express my gratitude to YOU for your ongoing and most gracious assistance in helping me and guiding me through this laborious new update process. I full-heartedly Thank You! I heed your precious advice. But here is the problem. When I first encountered this download problem due to the type of my ISP connection, I downloaded the 100Mb file. This was back on 04-19-2011 and 05-19-2011. The next time I clicked Run Live Update, it showed me again a 60 Mb file which my Norton product and dial-up could not complete successfully. Hence the download manager. And the same for every day thereafter and today as well. Therefore, reading your most informative reply, I have completely missed out on all IPS definitions since 04-19-2011. I understand there is no download link for them. I do so wish Norton would provide one such! Just now I’m downloading the latest 100Mb file but when I click Run Live Update, as per your valuable suggestion, it shows me a 60Mb file. Dysfunctional, is the word applicable to my predicament. I shall not impose further on your good graces with my problems. I would, as many other Norton users of the same product, like to be provided with a download link for all those IPS definitions. I have been using Norton for some years now. It would only be fair to their customers if they were to consider such a download facility. I submit this proposition respectfully yet with great frustration and disappointment that my IPS definitions are and will remain outdated from now on. Thank you SendofJive! WM
It sounds like you have NIS2011 with Smart Definitions option turned on. (This is in Settings > Computer Settings > Computer Scan > Smart Definitions.) If this is ON then NIS2011 will use a Core Definition set which is smaller in size but every bit as effective at protecting you from current threats. Switching this setting will cause NIS2011 to download a whole new Virus Definition package. However, the Intelligent Updater only contains the entire Virus Definition packages (which do include the definitions in Smart Definitions but just not as a separate set). Every time you run the Intelligent Updater and have Smart Definitions turned on, your next Live Update will be around a 60MB download of the current Smart Definitions only.
In your case, you should leave Smart Definitions turned OFF, (Turn off Automatic Live Update in the settings also [ to keep NIS2011 from trying to update when you are not ready for it ]), run the Intelligent Updater and then run a manual Live Update every day after that. Your downloads with Live Update should be much smaller this way and you will keep your IPS, Insight, AntiSpam and other definitions current also without going over your download / online limits.
dbrisendine, I offer you my full-hearted gratitude for your most precious and indeed, functional advice! I followed your excellent instructions and, voila! , Live Update was a manageable 900 kbs. Thank you ever so very much! WM
