"Unable to connect to server" trying to launch Norton Security app on Windows 10 S-Mode

Installed Norton on to my daughter's new Acer laptop which runs Windows 10 S mode. Trying to open Norton we get "Unable to connect to server" (error code 5).  There is a licence available, it doesn't seem to get that far.

I've seen a suggestion that IE is needed but not available in W10. S mode insists you use Edge so presumably it is the default browser though the Settings for Default Apps don't show a browser visibly.  Also seen suggestions that sound services can be an issue but do see any, it's a pretty basic laptop really.

Any solution or do we have to ditch the rest of her subscription & try a different product?

Note: you cannot run NBRT is S mode as not in the apps store. We have uninstalled & reinstalled the app.

You cannot ever return to S mode if you turn it off.

See the Product Announcement Blog for UWP.  https://community.norton.com/en/blogs/product-update-announcements/norton-uwp-app-16-windows-10-s-now-available

Section 5  states.

5. How do I download this app?

To download a copy on your Windows 10 S machine in US, search for Norton Security on the MSFT App Store (US only)

Outside of US, the app can be installed with an existing valid Norton Subscription by visiting our portal on a 10 S machine.

Post your queries in Other Norton Products board.

For more information, visit Norton UWP Install FAQ page.

So she needs to be using the device with Windows 10 S to log into her Norton Account and then click on Download. That should initiate the correct product for that device.

Let us know how it goes.

The UWP doesn't seem to be available in the UK yet.

It just came with the computer.

In fact I hadn't even heard of S-mode until I got my hands on her laptop yesterday. She'd done everything "right" that I had guided over the phone to her previously.

If it was mine, I'd definately take it off as I do use some programs that didn't come from the MS Apps Store & I don't want to use Edge. So I need to have that conversatiuon with her.

Thanks for the link.

You are welcome.

Your first link shows that you will be redirected to the Microsoft Store for the download. So if you were trying to use a download of Norton Security from your account, it would not work.

The second link could use some clarification, that includes the name of the new app they refer to.

Have you specifically chosen S mode, or did it just come with the computer?

Here is some info from Microsoft on the S mode, including how to turn it on and off. https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/4020089/windows-10-in-s-mode-faq

Ah, thank you. I did suspect the S-mode was the issue, but support pages like these ones implied it should work:

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/uk/home/current/solutions/v130433626

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/uk/home/current/solutions/v122058656?client=norton&site=nrtn_en_US  (this uses the same name "Norton Security", not a different one.)

Thank you.

So we could try the new App (I see the page in your link is dated only 3 days ago) or opt out of S Mode (no return).

You cannot use the standard Norton security products on a Windows 10 S version. You need the Norton Security Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app that is only available from the Windows App Store from the device with Windows 10 S.

See the information on the latest version in this Norton blog item.
