I notice that my Ghost icon in my tray had a line through it yesterday. When I opened Ghost I got the above message (Unable to connect with the Norton Ghost backup service on <computer name>). It gave ne the option to reconnect which didn't work. There was also an option to "Deploy agent". When I attempted to deploy the agent, I received a dialog box which requested admisistrator credentials. I supplied my logon credentials and receiveda message box with the below message:
Cannot deploy the agent to <computer name>
The detail was:
-Error E0D3EBC0: Cannot deploy the Agent to SCOTTY.
--User credentials cannot be used for local connections
(UMI:V-0-211-60352)
More info:
A backup was successfully taken on Monday.
I did receive a windows update after the backup was taken.
I also noticed that there was a system event log message as below. Don't know if this is important...but since I haven't changed anything here...
The Volume Shadow Copy service is marked as an interactive service. However, the system is configured to not allow interactive services. This service may not function properly.
Anyone know the name of the service that is needed? Can I start it manually? I can't find a service that is named "Norton Backup Service". I did find a couple of other services (Symantec SymSnap VSS Provider and SymSnapService) that were not running and started them manually but that did not help.
Any information and/or help would be appreciated. My track record Symantec support has not been good.
Thanks!

What version of Windows do you have? Answer: Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit What is the state of the Volume Shadow Copy Service? Under the “Log On” tab (this is for XP), Answer: It is not started, but if I start it manually the symptoms don’t change i.e. I still get the above message. is the “Allow service to interact with desktop” checked? Answer: it is currently unchecked. ALSO: You may not have noticed the below in my original post. I also noticed that there was a system event log message as below. Don’t know if this is important…but since I haven’t changed anything here… “The Volume Shadow Copy service is marked as an interactive service. However, the system is configured to not allow interactive services. This service may not function properly.” Thanks!
I noticed that the Ghost logs included an entry that said the service was stopped at the same time that a Windows hotfix (kb2120976) was installed. I backed out that and 3 other updates that were installed after it. I then uninstalled and reinstalled Ghost. After that i was able to get a backup, i.e. the service was now running. I then reinstalled 3 Windows updates that Windows was asking for. It curiously did not include kb2120976. I believe this was probably included in a later rollup update. Anyway, everything is now working!
Thanks for the help!
Glad that you're up and running.
